Facial steaming is a way to help yourself relax after a long day. This method helps to increase blood circulation on the face and open up the pores so you can remove the dirt on your face. To steam your face, you start with hot steam, then use a mask to remove dirt from your pores and finish with a firming solution and moisturizer. If you’re short on time, a quick steam shower is also helpful. See the following steps for both methods.

Boil 1 cup of water in a pot. You only need a few cups of water to steam properly. Boil water on the stove or in the microwave.

Wash face clean. While waiting for the water to boil, wash your face to remove makeup and dirt. Use a mild cleanser and warm water. Removing makeup and removing dirt is a necessary step before a sauna because the hot steam will open up your pores and anything on your face can seep into your skin causing skin irritation and breakouts.

  • Don’t exfoliate your face before steaming. This increases the likelihood that the steam method will damage your skin.
  • After washing your face, pat your face dry with a soft towel.

Pour hot water into the bowl. Pour hot water into a glass or ceramic bowl placed over 1 or 2 folded towels. Facial beautification will enhance your everyday beauty, so if you have a beautiful bowl, use it. If you are in a hurry, you can immediately use the pot of water you just boiled.

Add in herbs or natural essential oils. You don’t need to add anything to the water when steaming, but to make it special you can add some fresh or dried herbs or essential oils with scents that are beneficial to the skin. An herbal tea bag is also great! To increase the effectiveness of a steam bath, try the following herbs and essential oils:

  • Use lemongrass or menthol for an energizing sauna.
  • Use chamomile or lavender essential oil for a relaxing steam bath.
  • Use menthol or eucalyptus oil in a steam bath to treat colds.
  • Use sandalwood or bergamort essential oil for a stress-relieving sauna.

Keep your face still over the evaporating water. Cover your head with a towel to create a soft tent over your face and keep your face above the steam. Hold for about ten minutes. Close your eyes and take a deep breath to let the heat penetrate your face and open your pores.

  • Do not steam for too long or put your face too close to hot water. The heat of the steam can damage the skin if the contact area is too hot.

Apply a face mask. The next step is to use a mask to remove all impurities from the open pores. Clay masks will work well. Mix the clay with a little water and apply it gently on your face. Leave the mask on for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off gently with warm water.

  • Instead of using a clay mask, you can use a pure honey mask for the same effect. You can read more on the wikiHow on How to Make Your Own Mask.
  • If you don’t want to put on a mask, just wash your face with clean water after the steaming is complete.

Use rose water to tighten pores. This is the time to close the pores again. Do this so that after steaming, impurities cannot enter your pores. Using rose water after steaming will help your face to be firmer and fresher. Take a cotton pad soaked in your favorite rose water and apply it to your nose, forehead, chin, and cheeks.

  • Apple cider vinegar is also a great natural skin toner – give it a try!
  • You can also use lemon juice as a skin toner. Test it on a small area of skin first and then use it on your entire face. Some people have more sensitive skin than others.

Apply moisturizer to your face. The final step of facial steaming is to apply moisturizer to help smooth facial skin. Steaming your face will actually dry out the skin, so this is an important step. Apply your favorite moisturizer gently, or try an emollient facial oil like coconut oil, jojoba seed oil, or argan oil. Pay attention to the composition of the oil to know it is a natural oil and without harmful chemical additives.

Turn on the water in the shower. Leave the shower running until the water is really hot, you can see and feel the water evaporating. Using this method you will steam your whole body rather than just your face.

Wash your face while waiting for hot water. Just like when you steam your whole face. Washing off dirt and removing makeup before steaming is necessary.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/7a/Do-a-Steam-Facial-Step-11-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Do-a- Steam-Facial-Step-11-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Do-a-Steam-Facial-Step-11- Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Do-a-Steam-Facial-Step-11-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Stand still with your face near the hot steam for about 5 minutes. You don’t need to use a towel to get the steam directly onto your face like a full-face sauna, because you’ll be standing in a steam column limited by the bathroom premises. Steam your face for about 5 minutes, then lower the temperature and finish the steam with the shower.

Apply a mask when the sauna is over. To increase the effect, you can use a medicated mask or a tablespoon of pure honey to clean the pores. Apply the mask after completing the facial steaming, then rinse the face with the shower.

Apply rose water and moisturizer. When you’re done with the shower, pat your face dry and apply toner, then apply moisturizer to your face. You also need to apply moisturizer on the rest of your body as the hot steam can dry out your skin.
  • Advice

    • Use a cleanser immediately afterwards to remove dirt while pores are still open. Wash your face with cold water to close the pores.
    • Be sure to wash off makeup, dirt, and oil from your face. You can quickly wash it off again with a washcloth or makeup remover.
    • Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to hot water when the skin is acne-prone.

    Warning

    • During/after steaming, all the bacteria under the skin will be pushed to the surface of the skin, don’t worry if your facial skin looks worse. Traces are more noticeable after about an hour when gently patting the face.
