This wikiHow teaches you how to alphabetize a list of information on Google Docs (Google Docs) and Google Sheets (Google Sheets). Alphabetical sorting on Google Docs requires the installation of Google extensions, which means we can only do it on computers. To sort your Google Sheets documents alphabetically, you need to access the spreadsheet’s settings, which can be done both on the desktop and the mobile version of Google Sheets.

Select document. Click the document that you want to sort alphabetically. You may need to scroll down to find it.

  • If you don’t already have a document to sort, first click Blank and then enter the data you want to sort alphabetically before continuing.

Find the Sorted Paragraphs utility. Click the search bar in the upper-right corner of the window, type sorted paragraphs , and then press ↵ Enter . The Sorted Paragraphs extension page will open.

Select a Google account. Click the account you’re using on Google Docs.

Click ALLOW in the bottom right of the window. Sorted Paragraphs will be granted access to Google Docs and add this data to the Google Docs Add-ons folder.

Select the text to sort. Click and drag your mouse over the text or list that you want to alphabetize. The text will be highlighted.

Click Sort A to Z (Sort Alphabetically). The option is at the top of the pop-up menu. The information you select will be sorted alphabetically.

Open the Google Sheets page. Go to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/ in a web browser. A list of your Google spreadsheets will appear if you’re signed in.

Select the data that you want to sort. Click the top cell in the data column, then drag your mouse down to the last cell in that column. The data in the column will be highlighted.

  • You should only sort one column at a time if you don’t want to have to rearrange other parts of the spreadsheet so that everything correlates with the sorted column.

Choose a sort. Click one of the following options:

  • Sort range by cpumn [column name], A → Z – Sort the selected data alphabetically and leave the rest on the worksheet.
  • Sort sheet by cpumn [column name], A → Z – Sorts the column alphabetically and adjusts the rest of the spreadsheet to correlate with the rearranged data.
