The art of Tarot reading is a combination of knowledge and intuition that anyone can learn. The steps below will help you sharpen your abilities as a Tarot reader, providing insight and guidance for a fortune-teller or for personal development.
Steps
Getting acquainted with Tarot cards
- Classic and popular decks are always on the market, but new decks are published every year, so there’s always a wide supply to choose from.
- The five most popular decks are: Deviant Moon Tarot, Rider-Waite Tarot, Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot, DruidCraft Tarot and Shadowscapes Tarot. [1] X Research Source
- The main hidden set. The archetypes of the Tarot cards represented in the Arcana are the images that represent the lives, stages and experiences we all go through. It is the story of a person’s journey from birth with The Fop (young and pure energy in the form of a soul) through events and cycles, finally concluding with The Fop. World (end of life cycle).
- Secondary hidden set. The cards in the Minor Arcana describe the people, events, feelings, and situations we face during the “Fop’s Journey”. [2] X The Minor Arcana is quite similar to the traditional four decks of playing cards, each dealing with an element; The Wand represents the element Fire, the Cup represents Water, the Pentacle represents Earth and the Sword represents Air. There are also the Queen, King, and Knight (or Jack) cards of each suit, plus the Page or Princess cards.
- It will take you quite a while to memorize all 78 cards. Try studying with someone who can use the deck as flashcards to ask you questions.
- Don’t rely too much on books. Books will help you stay on track as you study, and this is very helpful, but you need to combine your intuition with the knowledge in the book to develop fully as a problem solver. Tarot.
- Try using this tip to incorporate your intuition as you study. Look at each card and think about what it means. Don’t worry if it’s true or not – just rely on your gut feeling. Then look at the book and see what it says. This will help you focus, detach from mere memory, dispel the worry of misinterpretation and allow your interpretations to flow through your connection with the cards. [3] X Research Sources
Experiment with the basics
- To familiarize yourself with the deck. Pick a card at random and watch for a while. Write down your first impressions and intuitive thoughts. Record these in some ink in a diary or notebook. Use a different color of ink to add information you find about the card from other sources (books, forum groups, friends). After a few days, review what you wrote and add a comment in third ink. - Daily commentary. Pick a random card in the morning when you wake up. Look at the card for a moment. Note its color and how you feel about the card. Pay attention to the overall mood of the card and the feeling it gives. Observe the figures in the card – what they are doing, sitting or standing, who they remind you of, and how you feel about them. Focus on symbols and what you associate with them. Record your thoughts in a journal – you can review them later as a means of learning and to track your progress. [5] X Research Sources
- Place all the cards of a constellation in front of you and ask yourself a few questions like, how do you feel about each card, what appeals to you, what about the cards makes you dislike, upset , or anxiety, in what ways are they similar and different, and what symbols they seem to share. Repeat this exercise with each set of all 9 numbers and record your impressions in a diary.
- Understanding the energy of each card will make it easier for you to interpret when there are many cards with the same number appearing at the same time. Instead of focusing on the meaning of each individual card, you can focus on the energy they combine with each other. [7] X Research Sources
- This game will really help you develop a skill that you can use when reading. When a difficult card appears in a reading and you want to help the reader solve the problem, you can suggest another card that can solve the difficult card. [8] X Research Sources
Simple Tarot reading
- Some diagrams to interpret a situation are: past/present/future, current situation/obstacles/advice, where you stand/what you aspire to/how to achieve that and what will help you/what hinders you/what potential do you still have hidden.
- Some diagrams for interpreting relationships are: you/other/relationship, opportunity/challenge/outcome, what brings you together/what pulls you apart/you what to look out for and what you want from the relationship/where your relationship is going.
- Some diagrams for explaining the inner life are: mind/body/spirit, physical state/emotional state/mental state, you/your current path/potential path function/stop/start/resume. [10] X Research Source
Practice more complex spreads
- Remember that if there is a point that seems to have a different meaning than what is in the book, use that meaning. Trusting your intuition is the right way to read Tarot cards and is something you will naturally do as you get more experienced. Listen to the advice of the cards.
Protect your deck
- Land. Bury the covered deck in sand, salt or earth for 24 hours. You can also spread the deck on a tablecloth and sprinkle with salt and/or sand for a minute or two, or any mixture that includes basil, lavender, rosemary, sage, or thyme.
- Water. Lightly splash the deck with some water, herbal tea, or herb decoction and wipe it down immediately or display the deck under moonlight in a safe place within midnight.
- Fire. Quickly glide the deck over the burning candle, being careful not to burn it. You can also expose the deck to sunlight in a safe place for half a day.
- Air. Surf the deck over the burning incense five or seven times, or try taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly into the deck three times.
Advice
- Use shuffling time to clear your mind. Choose decks with attractive backs so you can use them as a focal point during contemplation.
- Use crystal balls to create more air and energy.
- Think of the major arcanas as illustrative of the deeper spiritual aspects of life, and the minor arcanas reflecting events in everyday life.
- Face all cards if you want to avoid cards placed upside down. Reversed cards have a deeper but unnecessary meaning and can make reading comprehension more complicated for beginners.
- Light incense and candles to create a relaxing atmosphere when reading. A glass of wine and soothing music can also help you relax.
- Use the “extra” minor arcana to interpret particularly complex cards. Select one or more cards from the Minor Arcana and place them on top of the difficult card. Treat these cards like a series.
- When you feel ready to deal with reversed cards, there are several ways to interpret these cards. Some people interpret reversed cards as simply the opposite of straight cards, but this can leave your interpretation at a basic level and of little value. Maybe your interpretation will be deeper if you interpret the card on a lighter level in some way. For example, with Cups 10 appearing reversed, is happiness blocked, delayed, appearing but not real, or real but unclear, hidden, seemingly promising , or somehow not come fully? Often the context will explain the situation well.
- Sometimes the meaning of Tarot interpretation is not clear or ambivalent. To sharpen your reading skills, practice “reverse reading”: think about the meaning first (for example, “quick decision”), then try to think of which card might represent this. (e.g. card 8 in Wands). When asking a question for a reading, imagine some of the answers you might get and what cards represent them *before* you start drawing cards.
Warning
- Even if you strongly believe in free will, that does not mean that you cannot benefit from the suggestions of the Tarot. Instead of making judgments, think of Tarot readings as a map that helps you choose where you want to go instead of steering you in a certain direction.
- Remember not to take this too seriously.
- Some decks can cut skin. Be careful!
