Check the label for washing instructions and material type. Check to see if there are specific washing instructions on the label. Many fabrics will shrink easily when exposed to high temperatures, others will not. If the label says to wash it in cold water, you can wash it in warm water to shrink it. [1] X Research Source

  • For example, cotton fabric is very stretchy, so is cotton mixed with ppyester.
  • Synthetic fabrics, such as rayon and nylon, do not shrink.

Try washing your sweatshirt in hot water. To do this method, you will put the sweatshirt in a clean basin and run hot water over the shirt for about 5-10 minutes, then wait for the shirt to cool to room temperature and check the size again. [2] X Research Source

  • If you are satisfied with the shrinkage of the shirt, you can take it to the wash as usual.
  • If you want the shirt to shrink a bit more, use boiling water, washing machine and/or dryer.
  • To check your shirt size, hold the shirt over your body and look in the mirror to see if it fits.

Soak a cotton sweatshirt in boiling water. If after using hot water, the shirt still does not shrink as desired, turn on the stove and bring a large pot of water to a boil. When the water starts to boil, you will put the shirt in the pot, cover the pot and turn off the stove. Boiling water will cause the shirt to shrink more. [3] X Research Sources

  • If you want the shirt to shrink to 1 size, you need to soak the shirt in the pot for about 10-15 minutes.
  • If you want the shirt to shrink to 2 sizes, you need to wait until the temperature of the water is equal to room temperature.
  • Do not apply this method to sweatshirts made of ppyester fabric. High temperatures can cause this fabric to become rough. The ppyester fabric should not be exposed to temperatures higher than 81℃.
  • Or, you can put the shirt in a basin and pour hot water over it, then let the water cool to room temperature.

Wash in hot water after soaking the shirt in hot water. After you’ve soaked your shirt in hot and/or boiling water, you’ll put it in the washing machine. You can wash and shrink sweatshirts along with other tops, such as t-shirts. Choose the right washing load and wash the shirt with a lid full of detergent/detergent. After washing, you need to check the shirt size before drying. [4] X Research Sources

  • For maximum shrinking effect, it is recommended to choose the longest wash cycle. If you only want the shirt to shrink to 1 size, you can choose to wash it with the regular cycle.
  • If washing less clothes, you only need to use half of the washing liquid/detergent cap.
  • When checking the size of the shirt, you will hold the wet shirt on your body and look in the mirror to estimate the size of the shirt. Once the shirt is dry, you can try it on to see if it fits.

Spread a cotton towel over the shirt if it’s made of ppyester fabric. The ppyester fabric is prone to damage or hardening when exposed to direct heat. To avoid this, spread a towel or cotton t-shirt over your ppyester before ironing. This step applies to shirts containing 50% or more ppyester yarn. [8] X Research Sources

  • For cotton sweatshirts, you do not need to spread the towel on top when ironing.

Iron the shirt until it is almost dry. Because you wet the shirt before ironing, steam will rise when the iron comes in contact with the shirt. This evaporation reaction will help the shirt shrink. When the amount of water on the shirt is almost completely evaporated, the shrinking process of the shirt is also complete. [11] X Research Source
