Ppyester is a durable and shrink-resistant material. The dryer can help us shrink clothes, but only to a moderate extent. For oversized clothes made from ppyester yarn, with a little time and effort, you will be able to actively shrink them to your liking. If you don’t need your clothes to shrink too much, just use the washer and dryer. If you want it to shrink significantly, use an iron.

Turn the fabric left over. Heat that is high enough to shrink the ppyester will also cause the clothes to fade. Therefore, turning clothes upside down will help us reduce this. [1] X Research Source

  • Avoid washing multiple clothes together. Turning clothes inside out only minimizes fading, but doesn’t prevent them from mixing colors.

Wash with very hot water. Set the washing machine to the hottest water setting and the longest wash cycle. Make sure both the detergent and the conditioner are hot because hot water will make coppyester better than cold water. [2] X Research Source

  • While detergent shouldn’t interfere with this process, you don’t need to add it to your washing machine unless you want to both clean and shrink your clothes. [3] X Research Sources

Transfer clothes to the dryer immediately. Set the hottest temperature and longest drying cycle to dry ppyester fabrics. Extremely hot temperatures will play an important part in shrinking the ppyester.

Check the shrinkage of the clothes. Pull the item out of the dryer and let it cool to room temperature. If the fabric still does not reach the desired shrinkage, repeat the washing and drying steps a few more times to reduce the size. [4] X Research Sources

  • Note: the more times you wash and dry the item, the more visible the color of the fabric will fade.
  • Only continue this method a few more times. If the garment has not yet achieved significant shrinkage, consider using an iron.

Place the wet item on the clothes rack. As soon as the wash cycle is complete, pull the ppyester item out of the washing machine and transfer it to the ironing shelf. Make sure the clothes are still turned upside down to reduce the risk of fading. [6] X Research Sources

The item at the lowest temperature. Use low heat so the ppyester doesn’t become too hard. Move the iron back and forth between the rows of fabric. Continue ironing until the clothes are completely dry.

  • Do not use the steam mode of the iron. The dry iron will dry the ppyester when ironing and that’s what we’re looking for.

Check the shrinkage of the garment when finished. Once the fabric has dried, be sure to stop ironing immediately because if you continue, the heat of the iron can cause the ppyester to burn and discolor. [7] X Research Source If you perform multiple washing, drying, and ironing cycles on the garment, you will be able to shrink it as much as you want.
