You have many options for waxing the bikini area, but shaving is the most popular. It’s fast, inexpensive, effective, and painless (if done right). With a few prep steps, a good razor, knowledge, and aftercare, your bikini area will be as smooth as a flower petal. Note that it’s not just women who have hair in the biniki area! Men wearing sports swimwear (like “Speedo-style” triangle swim shorts) or any other type of swim trunks need attention to trimming the bikini area.

Use a sharp razor. Bikini area hair tends to be coarser than other body hair, so it can be difficult to shave off using a razor that sells 10 pieces per pack. Instead, choose a high-quality razor designed for sensitive skin. Use a new knife with a sharp blade, because if you use an old one that is worn it will scratch the skin and ingrown hairs. [1] X Research Source

  • Men’s razors are great for shaving the bikini area. They are sturdy and have many blades, not like women’s razors. They shave off hair while not affecting sensitive skin. (You can tell them apart by color. Men’s razors are usually white. Women’s knives are usually pink or pastel.)
  • Avoid using a razor with only one blade, unless it is a very sharp and safe knife. Single-blade razors are difficult to remove bikini hair. Look for 3 or 4 blades so you can get a closer shave.
  • A brand new never used razor will be sharper than a used one. If you must use a poor quality one-time razor, use a new one each time you need to wax for best results. You can use a used razor for the skin under your arms and legs.

Use soap or shaving cream. It doesn’t matter what cream or soap you choose, as long as you use them. You can choose: shower gel, shaving cream, or even hair conditioner, all of which work.

  • Soaps and creams that contain fragrance oils can sometimes irritate sensitive skin. [2] X Source of Research Pre-test product on other less sensitive areas of the body before applying to bikini area.

Decide how much hair you want to shave. Try looking at yourself in the mirror and determine how much you want to shave off. Every girl’s bikini area is different, but most of you will shave the hair that is easily exposed when wearing swimming trunks. This includes the hair on the upper thighs, the hair around the groin, and below the navel.

  • For an example of a simple shaving tutorial, put on your underwear in the bathroom. Wear them when shaving. Any hair sticking out of your pants needs to be shaved. (Note: this works best when the bottom of your panties is similar in shape to your swimming trunks.)

  • You might want to consider Brazilian waxing if you want to get rid of it completely.

Cut the hair close to about 0.6 cm. If your hair is too long, when shaving they will get caught in the blade and create a mess. You should prepare by using scissors to cut the hair short to about 0.6 cm or less. This step will make shaving easier. [3] X Research Sources

  • Gently pull the feathers out with one hand and carefully trim the feathers with the other.
  • Be careful not to let the scissors hit you. Trim in a well-lit bathroom.

Shower with hot water in the shower or in the tub. Bathing in hot water softens the skin and hair, making it easier to shave. Leave the shaving after you’ve finished your shower, after you’ve washed your hair, and done everything you need to. [4] X Research Sources

  • If you’re not going to shave in the shower, you should also prep the bikini area by moistening it with a warm towel. Skipping this step will cause the skin to burn and cause many inconveniences.
  • If you have time, you should exfoliate. This step will prevent ingrown hairs after shaving.

Foam the bikini area with shaving cream or body wash. Making sure the hair and skin are well lubricated before shaving is essential. Otherwise, the razor will burn you. Lubricating is never too much, so just rub a lot of soap into the skin. Keep a bottle of lube close by, in case you need more. [5] X Research Sources

  • While shaving, continue to add cream or shower gel to make the shaving process easier.
  • You may want to rinse in the middle of a shave to see how far you’ve gotten, then lubricate and shave again.

Shave in the direction of hair growth, do not shave backwards. Experts say that shaving in the direction of hair growth will be less irritating to the skin. Use one hand to hold the skin tight for a more effective shave, with the other hand to start shaving, just apply a little pressure to shave just enough. Continue shaving until the spot is clean.

  • Many people usually start by shaving the hair under the navel or groin area first. This is completely up to you, do whatever makes the job easier for you.
  • Many people find it difficult to get a close shave if they shave in the direction of hair growth instead of shaving backwards. If you find it difficult, shave on the side of the hair growth direction. Shaving backwards is only a last resort. There are other ways to prevent skin irritation.
  • Don’t over shave. You don’t need to shave over and over again. If the area is already hairless, leave it alone; otherwise, you will burn your skin.

Try on your swimming trunks to see if you’ve shaved off any spots. (If you’re satisfied, you don’t need to do this step, but if you’re shaving for the first time, you should double check to be sure.) Put on your swimming trunks and check, then go back to the bathroom and shave off any remaining hair if any.

Exfoliate dead skin. Use a towel or mild exfoliator to remove exposed dead skin. This simple step will help prevent ingrown hairs and other effects of shaving, so don’t skip it.

Skin care afterwards

Prevent skin irritation. For people with sensitive skin, there are a few more things to pay attention to.

  • Many people find using witch hazel or other soothing toners to help reduce or prevent skin irritation. Use a clean cotton ball or towel to dab witch hazel or other mild toners on the shaved area. This step will help reduce swelling and keep the area smooth and clean as new. (Note that this step will sting or sting if you accidentally scratch your skin while shaving. Be careful.)
  • Drying. Drying the bikini area will help avoid or reduce swelling of the hair follicles. Use a hair dryer on medium or low setting to dry. If the device only has a hot mode, be careful to keep it away from the bikini area – you don’t want your skin to be burned by the hot air on it. If you don’t have a hair dryer, (or don’t want to have to explain to others why you’re drying your bikini area), drying with a towel can also help.

Keep the skin moist. If the skin is dry or flaky, it will make you uncomfortable or burning. This also increases the risk of uncomfortable lumps or ingrown hairs. Apply moisturizer to the shaved area and moisturize it for a few days. [6] X Research Source The following mild, natural moisturizers are the best choice:

  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • Coconut oil
  • argan oil
  • Jojoba oil

Avoid wearing tights for several hours. This will cause the skin to itch and swell, so it’s best to wear loose underwear, comfortable skirts or shorts until the skin is less sensitive. [7] X Research Sources
  • Warning

    • Don’t borrow someone else’s razor. This will spread skin diseases, or blood-borne diseases (although very rare), even if the knife looks clean and has been washed with soap and water.
    • Do not leave the razor on the ground. Even if the incident of stepping on a safely designed razor is only mild discomfort and not an emergency room visit, leaving the razor on the ground is still not a good idea.
