This wikiHow teaches you how to lock a Microsoft Word document with a password. You can do it with Microsoft Word Windows and Mac versions, but you can’t lock documents with a password on OneDrive.

Open the Microsoft Word document. Double-click the Word file for which you want to set the password. The document opens in Microsoft Word.

  • If you don’t have a document yet: open Microsoft Word, click Blank document , and create a document before continuing.

Click File . This tab is in the upper-left corner of the Word window. The File menu will open.

Click the Info tab at the top of the options column on the left side of the window.

Click Protect Document . The option has a padlock icon under the document name near the top of the page. A drop-down menu will appear.

Click Encrypt with Password . Options are near the top of the drop-down menu. A window will open.

Enter password. Type the password you want to use in the “Password” field in the middle of the window.

Re-enter the password, then click OK . The password you choose will be confirmed. After you close the document, no one can reopen it without entering the correct password.

  • You can still delete documents without opening or entering a password.

Enter password. Type your password in the “Password” field at the top of the window. This will prevent others from opening the document if the correct password is not entered.
