If you want to sell your Xbox 360 or it has a serious system error that prevents you from playing games or connecting to Xbox Live, you can reset your Xbox 360 to wipe all content and restore it to factory settings like when it’s just shipped. But this does not remove parental control settings. If you are blocked by parental controls, you can reset your password to disable them, but you must prove to Microsoft that you are authorized to remove the feature. If your Xbox 360 is running slow or playing games with bad images, you can clear the cache to fix this problem.

Clear the cache if you’re having trouble with your Xbox 360. If the game experience is worse than usual or the system is slow to respond when switching between menus, clear the system cache. This works best with older Xbox 360 games. Clearing the cache has no effect on games, files, or media stored on the device. This will delete the game update so you have to download it again when playing the game.
