How to Rename a MacBook

You just bought one of the new MacBooks and want to name it but don’t know how! There are also cases where the new MacBook has only been used for a while as a gift from a sister, or bought from a friend, or bought somewhere else on the Internet. No matter how you got that MacBook or what it’s named, it’s not your name. It’s time for that Mac to be named whatever you want, and we’ll walk you through the steps below!

Rename the Mac device

Open System Preferences. From the apple menu, scroll to System Preferences and click here.

Click the Sharing folder. Look at the third row at the bottom that says “Internet & Wireless”. To the right of the Bluetooth icon, you’ll see a small blue folder with a yellow icon and the word “Sharing” below it. Please click that.

Search for the current name. At the top of the window that appears, you will see Computer Name : immediately followed by a text field with the current name.

Change name. You can change that name to anything by deleting it and giving it another name you like.

Show MacBook on Finder sidebar

Open Finder Preferences. From the Finder menu, select Finder Preferences… (Customize Finder)

Display MacBook. In the Finder Preferences window, click Sidebar at the top. Look under Devices and look for the MacBook icon (the device has just been named as you like). Click the box right next to it and check any other device or machine you want to appear in the sidebar, then close the window. Your MacBook should now appear in the Finder sidebar.

Advice

The method above applies to all Macintosh devices.
The default name might be “Steve Jobs’ MacBook” (Steve Jobs’ MacBook). You just need to rename it as you like.

Warning

Do not use single quotes (‘) because many times a question mark (?) will be displayed.
Not naming a name can make you regret later in case you forget the procedure above.
