Many girls have a habit of “trimming” the private area by removing part or all of the pubic hair. Whether it’s to prevent ingrown hairs, for cleaning, or for cosmetic reasons, there are ways to stay safe while doing this. For safe hair removal at home, you can try shaving, applying hair removal cream, or waxing with cold wax. If you want a professional service, consider hot wax or laser hair removal.

Determine the area to be shaved. You don’t have to shave all of your pubic hair. Depending on the purpose of hair removal, you can simply shave at the bikini line (the area that is visible when you wear a bikini) or shave the whole thing. Consider how much shaving is appropriate – for example, you may not want to shave in the labia or around the anus. Choose whichever way you feel most comfortable!

  • If you want, you can also create textures like triangular or square feather patches!

Trim hair before shaving. Do not trim too close to the skin to avoid accidentally cutting the skin. Use a hand mirror to get a good look and stop when you notice that the cut is starting to get too close. Your goal is only to trim the hair short, not to cut it completely. [1] X Research Source

Gently exfoliate dead skin cells before shaving to prevent ingrown hairs. Choose a gentle exfoliator like Origins Modern Friction or Nivea Gentle Exfpiating Scrub Exfpiate. Apply the product to the skin using small circular motions and gently massage for about 30 seconds. Rinse with warm water. [3] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to Source

  • Never exfoliate or shave if you have an open wound on your skin or if your skin is sunburned.

Apply shaving cream or gel. Be careful not to get the shaving cream in your vagina. Apply cream only on the outside of the labia and add more if necessary. You should use a clear shaving cream or gel so that you can see the skin you are shaving. [4] X Research Sources

  • You can also use conditioner when needed, but don’t do so often, as conditioners lack the moisturizing properties that most shaving creams have.
  • Do not use soap or shampoo in place of shaving cream. [5] X Research Sources

Use a sharp razor. Consider replacing the razor head with a new one before shaving your pubic area. Choose whichever razor feels easiest to use, and remember that the larger the head, the harder it is to maneuver. [6] X Research Source

  • To make shaving easier, you can use a razor with a lubricating strip. This type of razor will make the shaves smoother and easier.

Test a small amount of cream on your arm before use. Before using a cream or substance you have never used before, you should always test it on a small, non-sensitive area of skin. Use the skin on your arm or thigh to test for redness, burning, or a bad reaction. If so, don’t use that cream to shave your pubic hair!

  • Wait 24 hours after testing before applying the cream to the intimate area.

Do not apply the cream to sensitive areas. If the cream does not cause any bad reactions after 24 hours of testing, you can safely use it on the pubic area. Be careful not to get the cream in your vagina. Use a cream to remove hair on the outside of the vagina, and keep it away from the labia.

Apply a thin layer of cream with an applicator stick. Apply cream evenly and smoothly, avoid leaving thick cream patches. Follow all instructions on the package and wash your hands after applying the cream. Remember never to apply cream on sensitive areas! Pay attention to the bikini line for optimal effect.

  • If you accidentally get the cream on the inside of your labia, wash it off immediately.

Buy a home waxing kit. Hair removal wax sets are available online or in supermarkets. You can purchase a one-time waxing kit or multiple wax strips. Don’t forget that hair removal wax sets come in different types for different areas of the body, so be sure to buy one for pubic hair.

  • A one-time hair removal wax kit for home use costs about 100-300 thousand VND.

Trim the hair so that the hair is about 0.5 cm long. If the hair is too long, it will be difficult for you to pull it out or it will be painful to pull it out from all sides. If the bristles are too short, the waxes won’t stick and you won’t be able to succeed.

  • You just need to trim the hair you want to remove. Think about whether you want to remove all your hair or just remove the bikini line.

Warm the cold wax pads between the palms of your hands before applying them. Gently rub the patches between your hands to warm the wax with your body heat. This will make it easier for the patches to stick to the fur. Don’t use a microwave or hot water to warm the wax – your body temperature is hot enough.

Quickly peel off the sticker. Don’t be afraid of pain – waxing does hurt, but if you peel it off slowly it won’t work and you’ll end up having to do it again. Worse yet, you’ll end up in even more pain. Imagine you’re peeling off a bandage, pulling it off once. [13] X Research Source

Soothe skin with baby oil or aloe vera. Aloe vera has a very soothing effect on the skin after cold waxing if you have sensitive skin. Apply a thin layer and reapply if necessary. Never use aftershave or regular moisturizers as these products will make the skin extremely irritated and dry. [15] X Research Source

Do not shave for three weeks before waxing. If you regularly shave and are switching to professional hair removal services, do not shave for 3 weeks for hair to grow back. If you’ve never waxed before, you should consider trimming it. The ideal length of hair for waxing is about 0.5 cm. [16] X Research Source

Don’t choose laser hair removal if you have light hair or dark skin. Laser hair removal is most effective on light skin and dark hair. If your hair is too light, the laser won’t find the hair follicle (that’s what lasers do). If the skin is too dark, the laser can mistake the hair follicle and cause pain or permanent skin burns. [21] X Research Source

  • Newer laser hair removal machines like Nd:YAG work better for darker skin types, but be sure to call the salon first and ask if they have an Nd:YAG laser.

Don’t be surprised when the hair falls out. Laser therapy does not show immediate results. It will take about 2 weeks for the hair removal effect to start taking effect, and during this time, hair will still grow normally. After 2-3 weeks, the hair will start to fall out. Then you can shave. [23] X Research Sources
