Penile rosacea, also known as benign genital nodules, are tiny beads around the glans of the penis that develop after puberty and usually grow in one or two uniform rows. Penis beads are not dangerous and are not contagious, so they don’t actually need to be treated. However, some people choose to have these particles removed for cosmetic reasons. Talk to your doctor about treatment options and rule out other conditions that require treatment. If you don’t want surgery, you may want to consider trying unproven folk remedies to get rid of the nodules.

Talk to your doctor if nodules become a problem. Penis rosacea is an anatomically normal, harmless, and non-contagious condition. However, if it worries you, talk to your doctor. You’ll be examined to make sure it’s benign, then you can discuss treatment options with your doctor. [1] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

Warning : Be aware that any penile pearl treatment has some risks. Ask your doctor about these risks and weigh them carefully before deciding on treatment.

Ask about CO2 laser removal of lumpy particles. This is the most effective penile pearl necklace treatment. The high temperature of the laser will destroy the nodules, but you will be numbed to lose feeling during the surgery. Within 5 to 7 days after the treatment, tissue will be regenerated around the tip of the penis and you will have smooth skin. [2] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • You may have some pain after your treatment, but your doctor will prescribe medication to help ease the pain.
  • Usually just one treatment session is enough to remove all the nodules, but in some cases 2-3 sessions are needed.

Learn about radiosurgery to remove penile pearls. If CO2 laser therapy isn’t right for you, your doctor may recommend radiosurgery. This method uses high doses of radiation to treat the granules, causing the tissues that make up the granules to die and fall off. This option is not as effective as CO2 laser surgery but is more effective than other options. [3] X Research Sources

  • Radiosurgery, also known as Cyberknife, does not make an incision into the penis to remove the lumps but uses targeted radiation. The surgery is painless and takes about 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, you may need more than one treatment session to get rid of all the lumps.
  • During the test, the doctor or technician will be in a different room, but you can still talk to them over the intercom. The doctor will perform the surgery by controlling a robotic arm of the radiation delivery machine. [4] X Trusted Source MedlinePlus Go to Source

Consider if surgical removal is right for you. During this surgery, your doctor will use a scalpel to remove the nodule while you are under anesthesia. This type of surgery often leaves scars and is quite painful during recovery. However, your doctor will prescribe pain medication for you. [5] X Research Sources

  • Surgical removal is not commonly used to remove a penile pearl necklace because it can leave a scar. However, if other options are unavailable or do not work for you, your doctor may suggest this.

Learn electrocautery and scraping methods. This procedure, also known as hyfrecation, is a form of surgery that uses a device called a hyrefractor that delivers an amount of electricity that targets the lumps. [6] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Going to the source The electric current will dry out the tissues of the nodules, which the doctor will then remove using a curette. [7] X Research Sources

  • This treatment leaves a scar and requires anesthesia. You may be in quite a bit of pain during your recovery, but your doctor will prescribe pain medication for you.

Ask your doctor about cryotherapy. The cryogenic method uses liquid nitrogen to cool the lumpy grains and freeze them to remove them. After the procedure, the skin will heal and the penile pearls will disappear. The procedure will cause a slight burning sensation and usually does not require anesthesia. However, cryotherapy has some risks of complications, including: [8] X Research Source

  • Scar
  • Swelling
  • Loss of sensation in the treated area for about 12-18 months
  • Skin pigmentation changes
  • Blistering and bleeding in the treated area
  • Long recovery time

Tip: Cryotherapy may not be right for everyone, so talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of this procedure. [9] X Research source Cryosurgical treatment of pearly penile papules. J Am Acad Dermatp. 1996; 35:486-7. Ocampo-Candiani J; Cueva-Rodriguez JA

Observe if the lumpy particles have a uniform shape. Penis pearls do not have random shapes. [10] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to source Usually the papules form 1 to 2 rows around the glans of the penis. If these particles are scattered and not lined up around the tip of the penis, you need to see a doctor for an examination. [11] X Trusted Source National Health Service (UK) Go to Source

  • For example, if you only see a few lumps on the tip of your penis, it could be another disease, such as genital warts or sebaceous granules.

Notice if nodules appear anywhere other than the glans of the penis. If lumps appear on the shaft of the penis, it is probably not a penile pearl necklace. Penile pearls are located only at the glans of the penis. [12] X Research Source

  • For example, lesions on the shaft of the penis may be ectopic sebaceous glands or lichen planus.

Note any changes in the graininess. Penis pearl necklace will not change, The lumpy beads always stay in place on the penis since puberty. If you notice nodules growing or changing, see your doctor. This phenomenon could be a sign that it is not a penile pearl necklace and should be diagnosed by a doctor. [14] X Research Source

Dilute a few drops of eucalyptus oil with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of a carrier oil such as almond oil or baby oil. Dip a cotton swab in the oil and apply it to the lumps. Leave the oil on the penis all day. [18] X Research Sources

  • Advice

    • Remember that penile pearls are a normal anatomical variation of the human body and are quite common.

    Warning

    • Never try to remove the lumps on the penis with sharp or rough objects. You can damage the penile tissues and lead to problems such as pain or scarring.
