Waxing is an effective way to remove bikini hair, but salon waxing can seem a bit inconvenient and expensive. Performing pubic hair removal at home is definitely a good choice! First, clean and exfoliate around the bikini area, then find the most comfortable place to do the waxing. Apply warmed hard wax to the area to be removed in small patches. Then use a soothing aloe vera gel and gently exfoliate the intimate area to prevent ingrown hairs.

Make sure the hair length is from 0.5 cm to more than 1 cm. It is important that the hair in the bikini area before waxing is of the right length. Hair length less than 0.5 cm is considered too short because the wax will be difficult to adhere to. Meanwhile, hair lengths above 1.5 cm are considered too long because wax will bind many hairs together and make the hair removal process painful. [1] X Research Source

  • If the coat is too short, wait a week or two for it to grow.
  • If the pubic hair is too long, use an electric razor to trim it down to about 0.5 cm.

Use ibuprofen 20 to 45 minutes before waxing (if needed). The waxing process can be a bit painful, especially if this is your first time! An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen will reduce pain during and after waxing. The standard adult dosage is 400 mg. [2] X Research Source

  • Take the medicine with a full glass of water at least 20 minutes before waxing so that the pain reliever can take effect.
  • You can take another 400 mg dose after 4 hours if the pain is still there. [3] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

Clean and exfoliate the bikini area. Take off your clothes from the waist down and shower. Apply a mild cleanser to the area to be exfoliated, then continue with a gentle exfoliator. Gently rub in circles and rinse with warm water, then pat dry. [4] X Research Sources

  • Cleaning the vagina in the first place will reduce the risk of infection. [5] X Research Sources
  • The exfoliation process will remove the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and make the hair visible, making it easier for the wax to adhere to.

Wear soft and comfortable underwear. Underpants will help “locate” the area to be waxed as well as protect your sensitive area from getting waxed. Soft underwear will soothe and reduce irritation on the skin after waxing. [6] X Research Sources

Use hard wax or buy a hair removal kit. Hot wax is recommended for the bikini area because the hair in this area is often very coarse. Hard wax works quite well, and you can pull the wax out with your hands once the wax has dried. If this is your first time waxing, you will need to purchase a set of hard waxes. This kit includes all the necessary items as well as detailed instructions. [8] X Research Sources

  • Avoid using soft wax and soft wax kits. Soft wax works only on fine hairs. [9] X Research Source
  • Do not use cold wax. This wax can be painful when applied to the bikini area.

Heat the wax in a microwave or wax warmer. Hard wax needs to be heated before use. Each product will be different, so check and follow specific heating instructions. You can melt wax in the microwave. If you intend to wax in the future, consider buying a wax warmer. The wax warmer will keep the wax at the right temperature and you can take it with you to the bathroom. [10] X Research Source

  • Heat the wax as directed on the product. The wax should have a consistency similar to warm syrup or honey – ie pourable, but still thick.

Stir in the warmed wax and check the temperature of the wax on the arm. Use a flat stick to stir the warm wax until the desired consistency is achieved. Then dip the stick in the wax and apply the wax to your arm to check the temperature. You should make sure the wax temperature is comfortably warm, but not too hot. If you feel the skin on your arm is a little sore, you should wait for the wax to cool a bit. [11] X Research Source

Find a comfortable place to apply the wax. Do not wax in the living room or common space in the house. You should choose a secluded and comfortable place. Wait for everyone to leave so no one has a chance to disturb you. You will need time to enjoy and relax while waxing. [12] X Research Source

  • You can wax in bed or on the floor (with a sheet underneath) as long as you feel comfortable.
  • Place a mirror in front of you so you can see what you’re doing. [13] X Research Source

Gently stretch the area of skin you want to start with. Deciding where to wax first will be up to you, but you need to apply the order when conducting hair removal in patches. For example, you can start waxing from the inner thighs and move toward the groin, then finish at the anal area. With your left hand gently stretch the area of skin that you intend to remove first. [14] X Research Source

  • Sitting in front of a mirror is really helpful at this stage. You can easily see the parts that have been bleached as well as the areas that need to be refinished.

Apply wax to the area to be removed in the same direction as the hair growth. This will make the hair removal process easier and less painful. Dab a little wax where the hair isn’t growing to form a “strip” that you can grab to pull the wax out. [16] X Research Source

Wait for the wax to harden for 30 seconds. The wax will harden once it has cooled completely. As the wax hardens, it will be easier for you to pull the wax out. Similar to hard plastic, you can gently tap the wax with your fingernails to test the hardness of the wax to remove them. [17] X Research Source

Pull the dried wax in the opposite direction of hair growth. Stretch the skin with your left hand. Use your right hand to grasp the end of the “strip” of the dried wax. Keep your mind at ease! Then pull firmly on the wax strip in the opposite direction of hair growth. You will feel a little pain – this is inevitable – but with time and practice this will become easier. [18] X Research Sources

  • Try to pull the wax in a smooth motion, similar to tearing off a piece of tape.
  • Do not pull the feathers vertically. Always pull in the opposite direction of hair growth. [19] X Research Source

Continue to apply wax in small patches in sequence. Take breaks between segments as needed. It is not advisable to go for a quick finish by applying large patches of wax on the skin as this way the hair removal in the bikini area will not be as effective and will be much more painful. You should continue to divide the wax into small patches with a width of 2.5 cm and a length of 7.6 cm. Be patient and you will soon succeed as expected! [20] X Research Source

Remove wax residue with a post waxing skin cleanser. Once done, gently clean the bikini area with baby oil or a post-waxing cleanser. Do not expose freshly bleached skin to direct sunlight for 24 hours. If you plan to go to the beach or to the pool, it’s best to wax the bikini area the day before and let your skin “recover” for a few hours. Gently exfoliate the bikini area to prevent ingrown hairs. Do not exfoliate immediately after waxing, because at this time the skin is very sensitive and easily irritated. Wax bikini area every 3-4 weeks as needed. You should establish and stick to a regular waxing schedule. If left on for more than 3 or 4 weeks, the part of your hair that becomes too long will cause more pain during the waxing process. So, maintaining a strict waxing cycle will help increase your skin’s tolerance to pain.

    • Do not wax before the red light period. This is when the body is most sensitive to pain sensations. [27] X Research Source
