Coconut oil is a great natural hair conditioner to help strengthen hair, no longer dandruff, and bring shine to the hair. However, because coconut oil is too thick and greasy, it is difficult for us to wash it off with just water and shampoo. To get rid of excess oil, use a conditioner that doesn’t require rinsing like dry shampoo, cornstarch, or baby powder. You can also try incubating your hair with eggs, lemon juice or baking soda. After you rinse with water, these ingredients will wash away excess coconut oil, leaving your hair clean and moisturized.

Remove oil with citric acid in lemon juice. Squeeze 2 lemons into a bowl and mix in 240 ml of water. Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp, wait a few minutes, then rinse with warm water. The excess oil will follow this mixture. [1] X Research Source

  • You can also add a few tablespoons of honey to this mixture to soften your hair. [2] X Research Source

Add 5 ml of aloe vera gel to the shampoo. Rub the mixture evenly on hair and scalp until foamy. Leave the mixture on your hair for about 10-15 minutes, then wash it off. Aloe vera and shampoo will dislodge the coconut oil from the scalp. [3] X Research Sources
Use egg juice to remove oil and boost protein for strong hair. Crack 2-3 eggs into a bowl. Add 950 ml of water and stir well to form a custard mixture. Apply this mixture to dry hair and massage it in. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, then wash it off with slightly warm water. After you rinse your hair, the coconut oil is also gone. [4] X Research Sources

  • Do not use hot or even warm water to rinse the egg, as the high heat can cook the eggs in your hair. To prevent the eggs from being cooked, you must keep the water temperature not too hot. [5] X Research Sources
Use baking soda paste for oily skin. Mix 1-2 tablespoons (7-14g) of baking soda with a little water to form a paste. Rub this mixture on the roots and scalp while the hair is still dry. Concentrate in the most oily areas such as the swirling zone behind the crown of the head. After you have rubbed this mixture all over the oily areas, rinse your hair with warm water. The powder layer will be washed off easily, including coconut oil. [6] X Research Sources

  • Don’t apply this mixture to the rest of your hair, just focus on the scalp.
  • Baking soda will absorb the coconut oil without causing stickiness.

Choose a dry shampoo or a powder shampoo to absorb the oil. Whether in spray or powder form, dry shampoos are great for cleaning hair and removing leftover coconut oil.

  • If you prefer more natural ingredients, you can substitute with cornstarch, baking soda, tapioca flour or baby powder. [7] X Research Sources
  • Avoid products that contain talcum powder, which has been shown to be linked to health problems. [8] X Research Sources
Rub the powder on the roots of your hair. When your hair is dry, sprinkle some powder around the top of your head. Sprinkle a small amount first and gradually add if not enough, up to about a teaspoon of powder. You should focus on the roots of the hair because that is where the most oil is.

  • Do not use more than one tablespoon of dry shampoo as it can dry out your scalp.
  • Brush your hair so that the powder absorbs any excess oil. Continue brushing until the powder melts into your hair and reaches the shine you want. If your hair is dark, these powders may leave streaks or tiny white particles in your hair.

    • To remove the white streak caused by powder, you can wash it with liquid shampoo and then rinse.
  • Advice

    • You can also use a deep-cleansing shampoo that treats oil on your hair.
    • Always rinse your hair with warm water (unless you use egg water). Cold water will make the coconut oil thicken and stick more firmly on the hair, making them “stubborn”. [9] X Research Source
    • Note: when using coconut oil, a moderate dose will bring better results. You should start with a little and add little by little as needed, this will make it easier for you to wash off the coconut oil.
