Run the printhead cleaning program on the computer. Usually when the printed page appears stripes, many people will think that the printer is about to run out of ink. However, in some cases, a dirty printhead is also the cause. Try selecting printhead cleaning in the “Devices and Printers” menu to see if the situation improves. [1] X Research Source

  • Print another page after running the printhead cleaning program. If the lines still appear, the printer is about to run out of ink.

Shake the ink cartridge. If the computer gives an error that the printer is about to run out of ink, it is most likely because the ink in the cartridge is clogged. Take out each cartridge in turn, turn it upside down, and shake it gently. Then, reinstall the ink cartridges and test print to see if the problem is fixed. [2] X Research Source

  • You should only shake the toner cartridge very gently. If shaken vigorously, the cartridge will not only be damaged, but also run the risk of slipping out of your hand and breaking.

Clean the sensor part of the toner cartridge. A dirty sensor will also lead to an error even if the ink is still there, so you just need to clean this part and you’re done. Dab a little rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and gently wipe the toner cartridge sensor, then reprint to test. [3] X Research Sources

  • Gently wipe through the electronic sensor components inside the printer. Dirt that accumulates on any electronic sensor has the potential to cause failure.

Prepare the toner cartridge

Prepare Canon ink refill kits. These tools typically include ink for all colors in the printer, syringes for injecting ink, and a small drill bit. You can find them at most stationery stores or on the Internet. [4] X Research Sources

  • Contact Canon directly if you cannot find the right tool. Go to https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/contact-us-by-phone to find the contact phone number.
  • Note: each printer model will use its own ink refill kit. Canon ink products, although generally quite similar, are sometimes not interchangeable.

Take out the ink cartridge. Some printers have their own mechanism for removing the cartridge. The ink cartridges are usually located underneath the printer’s scanning unit, so you’ll need to open the cover. Usually, you simply press down on the cartridge until you hear a click indicating that it has popped out of place. Then, shake gently until the cartridge slides out. [5] X Research Sources

  • Do not forget to consult the user manual if you do not know how to remove the toner cartridge.
  • Do not pull the cartridges if they do not pop out easily. Doing so can damage both the toner cartridge and the printer.

Use the utility knife to peel off the sticker on each cartridge. If you have never refilled ink before, the sticker covering the ink pump hole is still intact. Carefully slide the blade under the sticker and peel it off. After injecting ink, we will seal this hole with tape so you can peel off all the labels. [6] X Research Source

  • For color cartridges, there will be 3 holes below the sticker. Each hole will lead to a separate ink compartment.
  • Wear gloves for safety when handling knives.
  • Gloves will also protect you from ink.

Use a hand drill to drill the hole above the cartridge. At the top of the cartridge there is a small circle marking the position to drill to inject ink. One hand holds the cartridge, the other hand holds the drill. Start drilling into the circle until the drill bit penetrates the plastic, Then rotate the drill to enlarge the hole. [7] X Research Sources

  • Check the hole size by inserting the syringe. If the syringe goes through easily, the hole is large enough.
  • To save energy, you can use a drill. Note: choose a small drill that fits the hole in the cartridge, and stop as soon as the drill penetrates the plastic.
  • With the color cartridge, drill the 3 marked holes.

Insert a needle into each hole to determine the color to be loaded. With color cartridges, you need to determine the color to pump into each compartment. Use a long needle to penetrate the bottom of the ink compartment until the tip of the needle reaches the bottom. Then, turn the needle back and forth and draw out what color the ink is. [8] X Research Sources

  • You can use a paper towel to wipe the tip of the needle to accurately identify the color in the ink compartment.

Refill and reinstall the toner cartridge

Inject the right ink color. Dip the tip of the syringe into a matching colored ink bottle. If the syringe has a squeezer attached, squeeze to fill the cylinder. If the syringe uses a plunger, pull the handle to draw the ink. [9] X Research Source

  • Canon black ink cartridges usually have a capacity of 7 ml, while color cartridges have a capacity of 3 ml each. However, the exact amount of ink to refill depends on the cartridge type. Find out the cartridge capacity in the manual and draw the correct amount of ink into the syringe. [10] X Research Source
  • Do this on top of a rag or in an easy-to-clean place in case ink spills.

Inject ink through the hole in the cartridge. Insert the syringe into the cartridge and slowly inject the ink in. Avoid pumping too quickly, or the cartridge may overflow. Stop pumping as soon as ink begins to flow out through the hole. [11] X Research Source

Clean the ink cartridge. Use a rag or paper towel to clean the toner cartridge. You can also dab a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth to clean the sensor of each cartridge. If the sensor is contaminated with ink, the printer will not be able to read it. [12] X Research Source

Stick the tape over the hole you drilled and then punctured. Attach the entire cartridge cover to prevent ink from flowing out. Press the tape down to prevent air bubbles from affecting the printer’s function. Then, with a needle or toothpick, poke a small hole through the tape, just above the hole you drilled. This will be the vent for the cartridge. [13] X Research Source

  • You should use adhesive tape that can be easily removed to facilitate future ink refills. Paper or electrical tape is appropriate. Aluminum foil tape should not be used because of its high tack.

Insert the ink cartridges back into the printer. Insert each toner cartridge into the correct tray that you removed. Depending on the printer, you may need to press down on the cartridge until you hear a “click”. This sound indicates that the toner cartridge has popped into place. [14] X Research Source

  • Double-check that you have installed the toner cartridge in the correct tray.
