Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection, usually in developing countries such as South America, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and parts of Asia (except Japan). The disease is transmitted by poor hygiene habits and poor food and water treatment conditions. Consuming food or drinking water contaminated with the feces of a person with typhoid fever increases the risk of contracting the disease. [1] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to the source If you have been diagnosed with typhoid fever, there are several steps you can take to help cope with the disease.

Take antibiotics. If you are diagnosed with typhoid fever, your doctor will determine how long the disease has progressed. If detected early, the disease can be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics will be prescribed for 1-2 weeks of oral administration. Some strains of bacteria that cause typhoid fever are resistant to antibiotics. Therefore, your doctor will do thorough testing to come up with the best treatment plan for the particular strain of bacteria you have. [2] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • The type of antibiotic prescribed will vary, depending on where you have the infection and whether you have been infected with this strain before. The most common prescription antibiotics are Ciprofloxacin, Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, or Azithromycin.
  • You may also be prescribed Cefotaxime or Ceftriaxone. These drugs are usually prescribed for 10-14 days of use. [3] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source[4] X Research Source

Take the medicine at the prescribed time. Although symptoms may go away after a few days, you still need to take the medication for the full length of time prescribed. Otherwise, the disease will recur and spread to others.

  • After taking all the medicine at the prescribed time, you should go back to the doctor to make sure that the disease-causing bacteria have been completely eliminated. [5] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

Hospitalization for treatment. In severe cases, you need to be hospitalized immediately. Signs of severe typhoid fever include stomach swelling, severe diarrhea, a fever of 40 degrees (or higher), or persistent vomiting. In the hospital, you will likely be treated with the same antibiotic but in an injectable form.

  • See your doctor right away if you experience any of these severe symptoms.
  • Water and nutrients will be taken into the body through a vein.
  • Most cases will improve significantly after 3-5 days of admission to the hospital. However, you may need to stay in the hospital for a few weeks to recover if it gets too severe or develops complications that affect your health. Surgery if necessary. Complications that arise during hospitalization can be diagnosed as severe typhoid fever. Once serious complications such as internal bleeding or gastrointestinal fissure appear, the doctor will recommend surgery.

Always take antibiotics. Naturopathy should always be used in conjunction with prescription medications. Although there is no cure for typhoid fever, natural therapy can relieve symptoms such as fever or nausea. Natural therapy only helps you feel better, not a substitute for antibiotics.

  • Consult your doctor before using natural remedies to prevent interactions with antibiotics you are taking. [9] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source Consult your doctor before using naturopathy on children or pregnant women.

Add water to the body. Drink plenty of water when you have typhoid fever. Add at least 2000 ml of water per day, in addition, should drink more juice, coconut water and other drinks. Dehydration is the result of diarrhea and high fever – the two most common symptoms of typhoid fever.

Adopt a healthy diet. Typhoid fever can cause nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, you need to pay attention to the food you are eating and make sure to provide enough nutrients and calories for your body. Consuming plenty of carbohydrates helps replenish energy, especially if you eat several small meals throughout the day. If you have digestive problems, you should eat soft and easily digestible foods such as soups, crackers, toast, puddings and jellies. [11] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • Eat foods like bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast. These foods are mild and pleasant to the stomach, thereby helping to relieve nausea and diarrhea. [12] X Research Source
  • Drink plenty of pure fruit juices (many juices contain sugar that makes diarrhea worse) with barley water, coconut water, or porridge.
  • If you do not have digestive complications, you can eat fish, custard, eggs to supplement protein for the body.
  • Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to increase the vitamin content of the body. [13] X Research Source

Drink honey tea. Honey tea helps ease the symptoms of typhoid fever. Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey to a cup of warm water and stir well. This drink is useful for any gastrointestinal problems. Honey helps reduce gastrointestinal irritation and protects gastrointestinal tissue.

Drink clove tea. This drink is also very beneficial for typhoid fever symptoms. Put 5 cloves in 2 liters of boiling water. Continue boiling until the mixture is reduced by half. Lower the pot and continue to soak the cloves in the water for a while.

  • When the water cools, remove the cloves. Drinking clove tea for a few days will help relieve nausea.

Vaccination. There are two commonly used typhoid vaccines: Vi ppysaccharide injectable vaccine and Ty21a oral vaccine. The injectable vaccine is given as a single dose of 0.5 ml in the upper arm and upper thigh. For the oral vaccine, you will be given 4 doses, 2 days apart.

  • The injectable vaccine is used in children over 2 years of age and adults. Booster injections are performed every 5 years. [22] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

Drink only clean and safe water. Unsafe water is the main cause of typhoid fever. Only certain types of water should be consumed when traveling to or living in developing countries. Only drink bottled water of clear and reputable origin. Ice cubes should not be consumed, unless the ice is made from bottled or safe water.

  • You should also avoid consuming ice cream popsicles or iced desserts if you don’t know if these foods are made from safe water.

Implement food safety. Typhoid fever is also caused by unsafe food. When traveling to developing countries, you should cook vegetables, fish and meat before eating. Wash food thoroughly with clean water before cooking. If eating raw food, it should be washed with clean water or soaked in hot water. Peel raw vegetables after rinsing with hot water. Do not eat vegetable peels because this is a hiding place for pathogens. If possible, avoid eating unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables.

  • Use clean and separate containers for food storage and keep food storage containers away from contaminated areas such as toilet drains, garbage or sewage. Do not store cooked foods in the refrigerator for too long and should be eaten as soon as possible. Otherwise, the food should be discarded after 2 or more days of refrigerated storage.
  • Avoid eating food sold on the street when traveling to countries where there is a risk of typhoid transmission. [27] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to Source[28] X Research Source
