iPhone has Voice Memos application that allows us to record and edit voice recordings. You can use this application to record your own voice, record lecture content, and so on. After recording the memo, you can crop it to get rid of the voiceless or unimportant information. You can also share recordings by sending files via email or messaging applications.

Open a chat. You need to talk to an iMessage user to send voice messages. Check the messages in the chat and title bar, if they are green it means the two of you can’t chat via iMessage. If you see blue, you can start sending voice messages.

Open the Voice Memos app, usually located in the “Extras” folder on the home screen. The app has an audio graph icon on a white background.

Click the Record button to start recording. The sound will be captured immediately using the iPhone’s microphone. The closer you place the phone to the source of the sound, the clearer the sound quality will be.

  • You’ll get better quality recordings if you use Apple’s earbud headphones with a built-in microphone on the cord. When recording on iPod Touch, you need to use this headset because iPod Touch does not have a microphone.

Drag the red bars to set a new start and end point for the recording. You can tap and drag each bar to change the starting and ending position. Use this action to remove soundless parts at the beginning or end of a recording, or to select the part of the audio that you want to create a new file.

  • You can cut multiple times to get the desired results. For example, you cut once to remove the soundless part at the beginning, then cut again to remove the soundless part at the end of the recording. You can then cut part of the recording to create a new file.

Click “Trim” after finishing setting up the new start and end points. You will be prompted to create a new recording from the cut, or overwrite the original.

  • If you choose to save new, the audio you selected with the Trim tool will become the new file, and the original will remain unchanged.
  • If you choose to overwrite the original file, only what you have set up with the Trim tool will be kept.

Open the voice memo you want to share in the Voice Memos app. You’ll see a list of recordings once you open the Voice Memos app. From here, you can send audio memos to others. Voice memos are sent in M4A format and can be played on most modern devices that support audio files.
