Invite three volunteers. This is a great trick for performing in front of a crowd, as you will need three volunteers to help make the magic trick a success. Remember that you must invite exactly three people; performance won’t work with two or four people. It is best to choose someone you do not know so that the audience does not suspect that your magic show is pre-arranged. [1] X Research Source

Give each person a piece of paper. This part is extremely important. Take a piece of paper and tear it into three pieces. Give the first piece of paper with a straight edge and a jagged edge to the first person. Give the second person a piece of paper in the middle with both sides jagged. Give the other person a third piece of paper with one straight edge and one jagged edge.

  • This tip probably won’t work if you don’t tear a piece of paper into three pieces, so you’ll need to have a large sheet of paper ready.
  • Notice the person holding the piece of paper has two jagged edges. This piece of paper is the crux of the magic trick.

Ask each person to write down a name. The first person writes the name of a living person. The second person (who holds the piece of paper with two jagged edges) will write the name of a deceased person. The third person writes the name of a living person.

Declare that you will draw the name of the deceased. Demonstrate the movement to leave the room or turn away as volunteers write. They will put their pieces of paper in a hat or box, and you do not touch the pieces of paper.

Withdraw name. Ask volunteers to focus entirely on the name they have written. Place the hat or box on your head, or have someone hold the box to show you can’t see inside. Declare to the audience that you already know what the dead person’s name is, and look confidently at the person who wrote the name as if you were reading their mind. Finally, put your hand in the hat and feel for the piece of paper with two jagged edges. Pull out the piece of paper with a graceful movement and read the name written on it to everyone’s surprise.

Guess the luckiest person

Ask the audience to say their names. Claim that you are writing each person’s name on each card and put them all in hats. At the end of the magic show, you will guess who is the luckiest person in the audience, and write your prediction on a board. Then a volunteer will draw the name of the luckiest person and will match your prediction. If performing in front of a large audience, you can choose the first ten people to volunteer their names; if it’s a small audience, everyone can participate. [2] X Research Source

Write the same name on all the cards. When the first person says your name, write it on the card. Write the same name when the second person says it. Continue to write the first person’s name on all the cards, even though everyone is saying their name in turn. Put all the cards in a hat when you’re done writing.

  • Make sure volunteers aren’t too close while you’re writing, or they’ll guess your intentions.
  • If you’re doing magic tricks at a birthday party or an event to honor someone, maybe you can simply write down the main character’s name on all the cards to make sure they’re called the “luckiest.” ” there.
  • Instead of guessing who’s the luckiest, you can guess who’s next to get married, who’s the most mysterious, or who’s the unluckiest. Tailor it to the event and its audience.

Write your prediction on the board. After everyone has said their names and all the cards are in their hats, write the special person’s name in large letters and show it to the audience. Claim that you know for sure the name of the luckiest person in the room.

Have a volunteer spectator pull out a name from the hat. Hold the hat over the person’s head and ask them to draw a name, then announce it to the audience. Everyone will cheer when the name is called. Remember to hide the rest of the cards right away so people don’t find out about your trick.

Choose a card

Cut a peephole in the deck box. You only need a standard deck of cards in the box. Take the deck out of the box and use scissors to punch a small hole in one of the corners on the back of the box. Put the deck back in the box and look through the hole. You need to see the upper corner of the last card in the deck, which reveals the name of the card.

  • Show off your repertoire with a pre-prepared deck. Keep the perforated side of the box out of the audience’s sight as you prepare to perform.
  • If you can find a box with the picture of the card on it, as standard decks usually do – the peephole will be hard to see.

Ask a spectator to choose a card. Start by having someone shuffle the cards a few times. Ask them to pick a card and show it to the audience, then place the card under the deck while you have your back turned. Take out the deck box, hole side facing your palm, and ask the person to put the deck in the box.

  • That spectator will definitely turn the deck face down and drop it in the box so you don’t see the selected card. If not, ask them to start over and choose a new card.

Act as if you are reading the minds of a volunteer audience. Hold up the deck, hole side facing you, and declare that you are reading their mind to guess the card they just picked. Look through the hole to see which card it is, then close your eyes and raise your head to the ceiling. Claim that you already know! Read the title of the card.

Confirm by showing the audience the card. Take the deck out of the box, being careful not to show the hole side, and hold the card up to the audience so they can see the bottom card.

Magic with dictionary

Before performing this magic trick, look up the 9th word on page 108 in the dictionary. Write the word on a piece of paper and put it in the envelope. Put the envelope in your pocket.

  • Note that this is the most important part of the repertoire. Without this step, your magic trick will fail.

When performing a magic show, invite two volunteer spectators. Give the dictionary to one person and the computer to the other.

Ask the computer holder to choose any three-digit number, the only condition is that the digits are not repeated. For example, the person might choose the number 365. The digits must be different – so it can’t be a number like 222.
Image titled Read Minds (As a Magic Trick) Step 17

Image titled Read Minds (As a Magic Trick) Step 17

Ask them to reverse the order of the digits (in the example above, the number 563), then subtract the small number from the large number (563- 365= 198), and finally reverse the answer number.

Ask them to add the last two numbers. In the example above, that’s 198+891= 1,089. The result will always be 1,089, no matter what number they initially chose.
Image titled Read Minds (As a Magic Trick) Step 19

Now ask them what the first three numbers are. These numbers are always 108. Ask the dictionary holder to turn to page 108.

Now ask the other person what the last number is. Actually this number will always be 9.

Image titled Read Minds (As a Magic Trick) Step 21

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/3/35/Read-Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-21.jpg/v4-728px-Read -Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-21.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/35/Read-Minds-%28As -a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-21.jpg/v4-728px-Read-Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-21.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight” :345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Ask the person holding the dictionary to look at the ninth word from the top. Stare at the person and act as if you can read their mind. When you feel ready, pull out the envelope and show everyone the piece of paper inside. The audience will be amazed when you come up with the same word that the volunteer says!

Guess what the audience thinks

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/a/ad/Read-Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-22.jpg/v4-728px-Read -Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-22.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/ad/Read-Minds-%28As -a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-22.jpg/v4-728px-Read-Minds-%28As-a-Magic-Trick%29-Step-22.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight” :345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Ask a volunteer audience to think of a number between 1 and 5. This is a great trick that exploits a common habit in the human psyche. While it may seem like you’re giving the subject multiple choices, most people usually guess the same thing that you would at the end of the magic show to the admiration of the audience. Start by asking the volunteer to think of a random number from 1 to 5 but don’t say it.
