Sometimes the program does not respond to any commands and you are forced to hot shutdown. There are many ways to do that, depending on the state of your program and operating system.

Switch to the Task Manager window. If no window appears after you have clicked on the Task Manager link, it is probably hiding behind a suspended program. Try pressing Alt + Tab ↹ to go to the Task Manager window.

Find and click the unresponsive program. Most likely this program will be under the Apps heading and marked by the Not responding tag in the Status column.

Click End Task. Once the program is selected and highlighted, click the End Task button in the lower right corner of the Task Manager window. Click End Program from the new dialog box that appears when prompted.

Click the Processes tab. When you end an action from the Applications tab/list, you may even have to end its actual process. With Windows 8, you need to click More Details from the bottom of the Task Manager window to display the Processes tab.

Find the progress and click it. The Processes list is longer than the Applications list, because here the processes running in the background are also displayed. You may have to search a bit to find the progress you’re looking for.

Open Command Prompt as administrator. Press ⊞ Win and then type cmd . Right-click the Command Prompt icon and select Run as Administrator from the drop-down menu.

Turn off the program. Type taskkill /im_filename.exe into the command line and press ↵ Enter . Replace ‘filename’ with the name of the program. For example, to close iTunes, you would replace it with ‘iTunes.exe’.

Open Force Quit. Press Command + Option + Escape to open the Force Quit window. The list of active programs will be displayed.

    Turn off the program hot. Find and select the unresponsive program and then click the Force Quit button in the lower-right corner of the window.

    • If none of these steps work, you may have to warm up your computer. Although there is a risk of losing data in the process, it is most likely your only option. Hold down the power button until the computer turns off completely, then turns it back on after a few minutes.
