A garden full of woody bougainvillea with vibrant flowers requires its owner to plant more than one tree. To propagate bougainvillea, you just need to cut a 15-20cm long stem from the plant you are growing, dip the cut end of the stem in a rooting hormone, and place it in a shallow pot of well-draining potting soil. After watering thoroughly, cover the branches with plastic wrap and place the pot in a cool place with indirect light. The twig will grow into an independent tree in just about 3-6 months without much intervention.
Steps
Cut branches from the mother tree
- Wear gardening gloves and safety goggles when cutting branches.
- Cut twigs or hardwood branches instead of young green branches.
- The best time to cut bougainvillea for seedlings is around late spring to mid summer, when the tree is growing fast and luxuriant.
- Growing branches to take root may not be easy. You should consider cutting multiple branches if the first one fails. You can cut off 1/3 of the tree without worrying about the tree being damaged.
- Disinfect garden tools with rubbing alcohol before and after pruning.
- Remember to prune at least half of the leaves on the branch. Thus, all the nutrients of the plant will be concentrated to form new roots.
- If you don’t plan to plant the tree right away, you can wrap the stem in a damp paper towel, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and store it in the refrigerator. This way the branches will not dry out for 1-2 weeks.
- Rooting hormone is available from garden centers, greenhouses, and plant nurseries. This product is sometimes called “rooting acid.”
- You can also try making your own rooting powder at home using ingredients like apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, honey, or crushed aspirin. [4] X Research Sources
Cuttings
- When using packed soil, consider adding a third of perlite, vermiculite, or light gravel to increase drainage. [6] X Research Sources
- The branch only stays in this pot until it takes root, so you only need a small pot about 5-8 cm is enough.
- Stick the branch slightly at an angle to allow more roots to grow. [8] X Research Sources
- Plant only one stem in each pot so that the plants have space to grow and do not have to compete.
- Be careful not to water too much. Soil that is too wet will also hinder rooting and even lead to conditions like rotting or mold infection.
- Close the bag by tying or zipping it. Maybe you just need to wrap a plastic bag over the pot and make sure the bottom of the pot is heavy and sturdy.
- Use a tree bell or a cold-proof frame for the tree, if available. [11] X Research Source
- Usually you should wait until more shoots appear along the branch instead of pulling up too soon.
Preparing to plant in pots or in the garden
- You do not need to water the branches like you would water the seedlings, because the roots are not fully developed.
- Your bougainvillea will likely die if you leave it in direct sunlight when it’s unprepared.
- Sudden fluctuations in temperature can also be harmful to the plant, even if the difference is not very large.
- The right temperature for bougainvillea is almost the same temperature we find comfortable. So the indoor environment is often the best place for plants.
- Plant bougainvillea in spring or summer to give it time to harden before winter arrives. [17] X Research Source
- The planter pot or the plot of land should be at least twice as wide as the root pot to give the plant plenty of room to grow.
- Once rooted, bougainvillea will not tolerate root disturbances well. If you want to replant the flower bush again, it’s probably best to buy a new one.
Advice
- When done properly, you will have many plants that take up the space you are growing. You can plant it around the house or give it to friends and relatives as gifts.
- The bougainvillea is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that is more than likely to grow successfully in almost any environment indoors or out in the garden.
- Cut off as many branches as possible. That way you will have another branch to plant if the first fails.
Things you need
- Small pots
- Tree pruning scissors
- Rooting-stimulating hormone
- Well-drained and well-balanced soil
- Plastic bags, tree bells, anti-cold frames for trees
- Large pot or space in the garden (for growing plants)
