The peony is a plant commonly grown in gardens because of its large and fragrant flowers. However, a common problem faced by peony growers is the accumulation of ants on the flowers. Peony buds secrete a resin that is very high in carbohydrates and ants eat it. The relationship between ants and peonies is so old that it is believed that ants are essential for peonies to bloom. However, this belief is not true, so there is no harm in keeping ants away from the peony bushes in your garden or peonies in your home.

Spraying water on peonies is an instant solution. To temporarily get rid of the ant infestation, spray the peonies vigorously with water. This will kill ants on the bushes, but won’t permanently prevent more ants from getting into your peony. [1] X Research Source

Using an insecticide spray on peonies is a more permanent solution. Look for a spray insecticide and make sure the manufacturer states that the product is effective at repelling ants. Use insecticide according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually 2-3 times a week for 2 weeks. [2] X Research Source

  • This method will generally not be acceptable if you are committed to organic gardening or do not want to harm beneficial insects that help pollinate plants.

Treat peony bushes with a natural ant repellent to avoid the use of insecticides. Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 40 mL) of peppermint oil with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle to create a natural repellent. Spray the mixture on the peony stems and around the bushes to repel ants. [3] X Research Sources

  • You can also use 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 40 mL) of cayenne pepper or minced garlic in place of the peppermint oil. Mix one of these with 1 quart of water and spray the solution onto a peony bush, or try making a solution of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 1 part water.

Prevent ants from climbing tree trunks with homemade ant traps. If keeping ants out of peonies has always been your goal, you can make a simple ant trap using paper and petroleum jelly (Vaseline cream). Cut the paper into a circle about 15 cm in diameter. Cut a straight line from the outer edge to the center of the circle, then cut out a small circle in the center of the paper circle. Spread Vaseline cream on one side of the paper circle, then place the paper circle around the peony stem, with the stem in the center of the circle. [4] X Research Sources

  • If the side of the paper has Vaseline cream facing up, any ants that try to climb the tree will get stuck there.

Plant plants that repel ants along with peonies. Another way to prevent ants from entering peonies is to plant ant-repelling plants nearby. Some common plants that repel ants are geranium, mint, garlic, and chamomile. [5] X Research Sources

Cut and wash the peonies when the buds are in the “marshmallow stage”. The peony bud is ready to be cut with some petals popping and is as soft as marshmallow when you squeeze it gently. Before you bring flower buds indoors, rinse them in cold water to get rid of any ants. Plug the flower stems into the vase, the flowers will bloom. [6] X Research Sources

  • To get rid of ants even more effectively, you can add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the water. A mild soap solution will not harm the flowers. [7] X Research Sources

Shake off the fully bloomed peonies gently before bringing them inside. If you cut a peony that has bloomed on a bush and brought it indoors, turn the flower upside down and gently shake it once or twice. Find any ants that might still be hiding in the petals and flick them away with your fingers. [8] X Research Sources

  • You can also wash peonies in cold water. [9] X Research Source

Prevent ants from getting close to flowers with honey and molasses. Make an ant trap by mixing 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of honey, 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of hot water, and 1 tablespoon (26 grams) of borax. Spread the mixture on a flat surface such as a piece of paper or notepad and place it near the flower. The ants will be attracted to the honey and die from eating the molasses. [10] X Research Source

  • This solution is not safe for families with children or pets, as it will be very toxic if someone eats it.

Sprinkle cinnamon on flowers to naturally repel ants. Ants are afraid of the smell of cinnamon, so if you don’t mind your flowers smelling like spice, sprinkle a small amount on flower buds or petals. You can also try placing a cinnamon stick near the peonies. [11] X Research Source
  • Advice

    • Consider ants and peonies simply living in harmony. Ants hardly infest peonies, they only feed on nectar.
    • Avoid planting peonies near your home, especially near the kitchen. Ants on flowers can find their way into your home more easily.
