Have you ever been in a situation where you couldn’t find the correct answer or solution? If so, you’ll probably want to adopt divergent thinking. This creative thinking process looks at different parts of the assigned topic and helps you to form a problem-solving approach in a short time. [1] X Research Resources Applying divergent thinking is not difficult if you know what you need to do.
Steps
Definition of Thinking Differently
- Fluency – the ability to generate many ideas or solutions quickly;
- Flexibility – the ability to think of multiple ways to solve a problem at once;
- Originality – the ability to generate ideas that most people don’t think of;
- Meticulousness – the ability to think not only of the good points of an idea but also to implement them.
Encourage Different Thinking
- What do they expect to see on the table?
- Will they be disappointed if something is missing?
- Is there something ridiculous on the table, like a hair dryer?
- How to arrange everything in a more appetizing, and add something that will make the party less attractive? [8] X Research Sources
- By challenging your imagination, your mind gets used to new thought patterns, and it becomes easier to generate new ideas. [9] X Research Source
- The more you formulate specific questions that dig into the difference, the better your chances of success.
- Simplify a complex problem by breaking it down into small pieces. Then explore each section by asking, “What if?”
Practicing Unique Thinking Methods
- Do not criticize any idea, and every idea is noted.
- After a long list of ideas has been generated, we can go back and review the ideas to gauge their value. [13] X Research Source
- Write the word “Starting a Business” in the center of the piece of paper and circle it.
- Let’s say you can think of four sub-topics including products/services, capital, markets, and people.
- So, connect four lines, one for each sub-topic, from the circle containing your main topic. Your drawing is now like a child’s drawing of the sun.
- At the end of each line, draw a circle. Each circle has the name of one of four sub-themes (products/services, capital, markets, and people).
- Next, suppose that in each of these sub-topics, you create two more sub-topics. For example, with the subject “products/services” you think of “dresses” and “shoes” and with the subject “funds” you think of “loans” and “savings.”
- So draw 2 lines from the circle of the small subjects, making it look like a tiny sun with 2 rays.
- At the end of each line (or “ray”), draw smaller circles and write the name of each smaller subject in each circle. For example, from the sub-topic “products/services”, add “dress” to the smaller subject circle and “shoes” to the other. From the subtopic “capital”, write “loan” in one sub-topic circle and “savings” in the other circle.
- Once completed, this map can be used to further develop the theme. It includes both divergent thinking and convergent thinking. [16] X Research Source
