Pause for a moment every time you think of something bad about your appearance. What were you doing when that thought popped into your head? How does it make you feel? It’s important to recognize when you have negative thoughts about your appearance and what triggers those thoughts so you can turn them around later. [1] X Research Source

  • For example, when you’re in the changing room of a mall, you might think, “I’m so fat that I can’t fit any of the clothes here. I shouldn’t have tried on clothes.” How does this thought make you feel? Suffering, angry, sad?
  • Once you see someone jogging, you may suddenly think, “I will never have a toned body like this person.” This type of thinking can make you feel frustrated or upset.

Fight negative thoughts

Think of a positive after every negative thought. You don’t have to accept those unhealthy thoughts! Ask yourself, are you being fair to yourself, are these thoughts helping you. Would you say those things to your friends? Here are some examples of ways to redirect negative thoughts: [2] X Research Sources

  • “This suit doesn’t suit me, but I have other clothes that make me feel confident.”
  • “These clothes don’t fit me, but that doesn’t mean I have to give up, just keep trying on other suits and I’ll find one that I like.”
  • “Although my arms are not neat, thanks to these two arms I can hold children and hug people.”

Write down what you like about your body

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/0/0a/Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-3.jpg/v4-728px-Stop-Feeling- Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/0a/Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body- Step-3.jpg/v4-728px-Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Redirect your thoughts to what you hold dear instead of what you don’t like. Take a moment to list all the precious things in your body. You can write down physical features or functions that your body does. When you’re feeling low on confidence, re-read this list to remind yourself how amazing your body is! [3] X National Eating Disorders Association Trusted Source Go to Source

  • For example, you could write that your body helps you swim, hug loved ones, or overcome challenges you face every day.

Wear well-fitting clothes

Find a style that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Following new trends is often stressful, especially when those things don’t suit your figure. You may also feel like you have to wear a smaller size to look good. Throw away all those misconceptions! Find comfortable clothes that you find stylish and fit you. You will feel more attractive, and that will show in your appearance. [4] X Research Sources

  • Don’t be shy or embarrassed about buying your right size. Then you will find them more useful and designed to fit your body.

Be good to your body

Eat nutritious food, be active and get enough rest. When you have an unhealthy feeling about your appearance, you may find a way to change it. This can include extreme measures like fasting if you feel overweight or brute-force training if you want to build muscle. Eat healthy foods that you enjoy when you’re hungry, and don’t forget to be physically active. Avoid allowing yourself to indulge in addictive behaviors such as drinking or using drugs. [5] X Research Sources

  • Taking care of your body is a way to nourish your mind, so take the time to meet your own needs.

Participate in activities that you enjoy or help you relax

Exercising, meditating, gardening, or doing something else can boost your mood. Do things that you enjoy because of the pleasant feeling it brings. You can go for a jog because it helps you feel energized or do yoga because it calms you down. That way, you will feel loved your body for what it does. [6] X Research Sources

  • Don’t forget to add these activities to your to-do list!

Appreciate your personality and mental strength

Remind yourself daily of your great qualities. You don’t have to have a “perfect” body to have a beautiful personality. At least once a day, think about one of your personality strengths – whether you are empathetic, assertive, or eager to learn, for example. Tell yourself that those traits have nothing to do with how you look. [7] X Research Sources

  • Think of people you love or people who are famously admired in history. Do you appreciate them for their looks or for the miracles, benevolent or meaningful actions they have done?

Talk to your partner about your body image

Image titled Stop Feeling Insecure About Your Body Step 8

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/e9/Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Stop-Feeling- Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-8.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/e9/Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body- Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Stop-Feeling-Insecure-About-Your-Body-Step-8.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Be honest if you feel shy about being physically close. Many people feel embarrassed during intimate moments, especially if they are naked in front of their partner. To feel more confident about your body and comfortable with your partner, talk openly with them about how you feel. Then, talk to each other about things you’re both comfortable with. [8] X Research Sources

  • For example, you could start a conversation by saying, “I really like you and am happy to have you, but I feel uncomfortable and nervous when I’m not dressed in front of you.”

Be with the people who support you

Stay away from people who make you feel bad about your body. Maybe you have a family member who often complains that you are too skinny or a friend who constantly tells you to lose weight. It’s hard to ignore comments like that, so try to avoid being around them. Instead, spend time with people who like you without judging your appearance. [9] X Research Source

  • You don’t have to confront those people unless you want to talk to them about it. If you want to talk, you can tell them, “I don’t want to come to your party. You keep making me feel sad because of my looks, and I don’t want that negative feeling.”

Avoid or ignore unrealistic images on social media

Unfollow people who only share images of their ideal or “perfect” body. If you scroll through Instagram or Facebook a few times a day and only see glossy images of people, you may start to feel the pressure to change your appearance. Let go of the guilt and spend time on other more useful sites. [10] X Research Source

  • If you find it difficult to avoid the temptation to go social, you can use an app that helps limit the time you spend on certain sites.

Refrain from scrutinizing your own appearance

Stop weighing yourself every day and look less in the mirror. Obsession with your appearance can make it very difficult to build a positive perception of how you look, especially if you’re worried about things you can’t change. To keep yourself out of pressure, stay away from the scale, stop measuring your waist with a tape measure, and stay out of the mirror. [11] X Research Source

  • Instead of focusing on your body shape and size, aim for your health and happiness.

Find a healthcare professional

    Seek support if you are concerned about your appearance. Talk to your doctor or therapist if negative feelings about your body make you increasingly depressed. You are not alone! Negative perceptions of your appearance are common, and healthcare professionals can help you work through these feelings with cognitive-behavioral therapy or group therapy. [12] X Research Source
