Most digital safes have mechanical locks that you can open manually instead of entering a password. But what do you do if you lose your key and the numeric keypad has no power? Do not worry! You can still open the digital safe without the key by restoring the power connected to the numeric keypad to enter the password. In case you forget your password, the safe can still be reset by pressing the reset button on the back of the door panel with a stick or small wire. If all else fails, try breaking the lock or drilling through the keyhole.

Charge or replace the battery if you don’t have the key. Some digital safes have a keypad for you to enter your password, and a mechanical key to open it. If the keyboard of the lightning safe has run out of battery and you do not have the key, replace or charge the battery for the numeric keypad. [1] X Research Source

  • If you don’t have a key, you can open the digital safe using the electronic keypad.

Find the keyboard’s battery tray and open it. Look around or above the numeric keypad to find the battery tray. The battery tray is usually located below the keyboard. You can use your hands to open the latch and remove the battery cover. [2] X Research Source

  • With some digital safes, you’ll need a screw to remove the battery tray.
  • Check to make sure that the battery tray is not damaged or lost. If you see these signs, you need to take the safe to a professional place to open it.

Replace with correct battery type and voltage. After opening the battery tray, you need to take out the old battery. Then, insert a new battery of the same type as the old one in its original position, and then close the battery tray cover. [3] X Research Sources

Plug in the safe’s power adapter (if any). If the safe has a USB slot, power port, or 9-vpt battery tray on the numeric keypad, plug it in or insert batteries. Let the numeric keypad charge for at least 10 minutes to reset the power, then try turning it back on. [4] X Research Sources

  • If the safe has a USB charging port, you can use any USB charging cord.
  • Some safes use a separate power cord to charge the keyboard, but you can try a different cord if the plug fits into the charging port.
  • The charging light or the light below the keyboard will activate when power is restored.

Thread a coat hanger through one of the safe’s holes. Break the hanger and then into a long, thin metal wire. Thread the hanger into one of the openings to access the control panel. [7] X Research Sources

  • Care must be taken so that the hanger does not get stuck in the hole, otherwise the electronic keyboard may be damaged and cannot be reset.

Press the Reset button located inside the safe’s numeric keypad. Shine a flash to find the Reset button on the back of the panel and thread the metal wire into it. This is usually a small black button with the label “Reset” next to it. You need to get the hanger/wire head to press this button. [8] X Research Sources

  • The control panel will light up or make a “beep” sound when you press the Reset button.

Confirm the new password by tapping the Set button next to the Reset button. Shine the flash through one of the slits on the safe and look for the “Set” button next to the “Reset” button just now. Use the metal end of the wire to press this button to confirm the password you just entered. [10] X Research Source

  • It is possible that the control panel will light up or make a “beep” sound after the new password is confirmed.

Insert the tip of the knife into the keyhole and shake to unlock. If your digital safe has a mechanical keyhole, poke it with a sharp knife. Shake the tip of the knife back and forth to force the locking mechanism to open. If successful, you will be able to open the safe. [12] X Research Source

  • This method usually works for low-priced safes.
  • It is likely that this solution will also work on safes that combine keys and electronic keyboards.

Insert the screwdriver into the keyhole and rotate to break the lock. Place the safe on a flat surface and insert a flat-head screwdriver into the keyhole. Turn the screwdriver back and forth counterclockwise until you hear or feel the locking mechanism snap. Then, take out the screwdriver and open the lightning safe. [13] X Research Source

  • After damaging the locking mechanism with a screwdriver, you may no longer be able to lock the safe.

Drill through the mechanical keyhole. If all else fails, this is the last resort. You need to use an electric drill with a drill bit powerful enough to penetrate metal. Drill the keyhole in the safe until the drill penetrates and destroys the locking mechanism. You will then be able to open the safe. [14] X Research Source

Note: Safes are not easy to drill, so this could damage the drill.
