Apps taking up too much internal memory on your phone? On older Android versions, you can move apps to an SD card. But from Android 4.0 – 4.2 OS, Google removed this feature and we can NOT move the app. [1] X Research Source Although reactivated in version 4.3, this feature is only available on specific phone models and must be authorized by the application developer. For how to move apps if your phone allows it, see step 1 below.

Select application. Tap the app you want to move to the SD card. Find and tap the button that says “Move to SD Card”. If this button is greyed out, you cannot move the application to the memory card. If you don’t see this button, your Android version and phone probably don’t support moving apps to SD card. [2] X Research Source

  • Remember that only applications that have been specifically designated to allow moving to the memory card will have this option available. [3] X Research Sources

Download third-party apps. You can download apps like Link2SD to quickly determine which apps can move to the SD card, saving you time instead of having to check each item. These apps can also move apps that aren’t normally allowed to be moved, however, this sometimes causes the app to crash.

    • These programs will be more effective if your phone is rooted (jailbroken).
