Most of us rely on the weather forecast to know what the weather will be like, but you can also predict this for yourself with your observation skills and knowledge of the laws of the weather. Predicting the weather is not only a fun hobby, but also a very useful skill if you love outdoor activities, such as hiking or camping. You’ll be able to predict what’s coming if you know what to watch for without having to look at the weather forecast or use technology.
Steps
Observe the wind and the air
- You can use grass or flower petals to know the direction of the wind. Drop a few blades of grass or petals in the wind and watch them fly and fall.
- You can also tell the direction of the wind by wetting a finger and holding it out. If you feel cool on one side of your finger, the wind is blowing from that direction.
- When the smoke rolls down, bad weather is very near. The low pressure zone is already right over your area.
- At this point, you may be able to observe other signs of the storm, such as dark clouds. [3] X Research Sources
- If you’re near a swamp, you can smell the marsh gas rising just before the storm. [5] X Source of Research The smell of marsh gas resembles the smell of rotten eggs because it is formed from decaying vegetation. [6] X Research Sources
- The pine cones also tell you the humidity in the air, as they close when it’s wet and open if the air is dry. [8] X Research Sources
- If you live in an area with high humidity, you should rely on other signs to predict the weather.
Cloud observation
- Thin white clouds usually promise a clear day.
- Flat clouds tell you the air is stable, puffy clouds are unstable. [10] X Research Source
- Smaller puffy clouds look calm, but they usually develop within a day. If there are clouds like this in the sky, it means a storm is coming. [11] X Research Source
- Dark clouds signal an approaching storm, but without strong winds.
- Brown clouds mean that a storm with strong winds is coming.
- White clouds usually mean good weather, although a storm could still be coming in the near future. [13] X Research Source
- Gray clouds often signal a new or mild storm. However, gray skies mean that the storm is widespread and can last for a long time. [14] X Research Source
- Low and clustered clouds are a sign that the weather is turning bad.
- The clouds rose and dispersed, showing that the sky was gradually clearing. [15] X Research Source
Observing the sky
- Red color can manifest as dark orange or dark red.
- If you see a red sky at night, you can sleep well, as it indicates clear weather in the west is moving towards you, and bad weather in the east has moved away.
- You may remember the adage, “The sky is red at night, the shepherd is happy, the sky is red in the morning, the shepherd is alert. [16] X Research Source
- If you see a rainbow in the east, it means the rain has passed and the sky will be clear.
- Remember this adage, “Rainbow in the morning, watch out.” [17] X Research Source
- Remember the old adage, “The moon is full of drought, the moon is full, it’s rainy.” The circle around the moon means that a hot front is coming and often brings rain. The halo is formed by rock crystals passing through the moon. [19] X Research Source
- The double halo around the moon can signal strong winds during an oncoming storm. [20] X Research Source
- Another proverb says “The moon is clear, the frost is down”. Clear skies mean there are no clouds to trap heat on the ground, so the weather will be colder at night and the next morning, even if it’s not cold enough for frost to appear. [21] X Research Source
- A starless sky means a lot of clouds are covering the sky due to the oncoming air mass. If there are many stars, the sky is clear.
Observe the behavior of animals
- If the birds fly high in the sky, usually the weather will be quite good.
- If you’re near the ocean, look for seagulls perched on the beach that signal a storm.
- Notice the large flocks of birds perching.
- Birds are also often silent before the storm. Birds chirping and chirping often promise a beautiful day.
- This mark only applies to cows, not to other livestock species.
- Snakes can even predict earthquakes. If you see a snake unusually out of the nest, an earthquake is about to happen. [29] X Research Sources
- Snakes often come out of the nest when it’s sunny out to warm up. Snakes don’t like cold because they are cold-blooded. [30] X Research Source A snake coming out of its nest on a sunny day is a sign that the weather is about to get worse.
Advice
- You can use a barometer to measure pressure changes. Record it in your notebook and observe what happens when the pressure changes. Pay a little attention, and you can draw your own kind of prediction about the weather in your area.
- You can also observe the grass! Wet grass in the morning usually means that the day will be clear, and dry leaves in the morning with strong winds often signal an impending storm.
- People with arthritis often complain that they feel more pain in their joints when the pressure or temperature drops.
Warning
- Some extreme weather events, such as tornadoes, are difficult to predict. Be sure to follow the local weather forecast to know how to stay safe if a storm is coming.
- Weather prediction of this kind is not an exact science. Do not risk your life or the lives of others because of these tests.
