Surely you know this feeling: Dong tiger only 2 hours 38 minutes, but not until 3 o’clock. Every second seemed to drag on for an hour. However you can make the time pass faster with a little effort.

Steps

Distract yourself

Dream a little bit. If there’s a few minutes left before the time-out bell rings, let your mind wander for a bit. Think about what you would do after school, or where on earth you would go if you could go anywhere. Imagine you can fly or have some supernatural power. Let your imagination run wild and take a break. When you come back to reality, you will find that time has passed faster than you thought. [1] X Research Source

  • Don’t let your imagination fly too far. Try to stay focused on class by incorporating lesson content into your fantasy flights. For example, if you are bored with math class, try to bring the lesson into the virtual world of robots to pull you back to reality and stick with the lesson. Are those robots fighting each other using quadratic equations?
Draw a doodle in your notebook. If the teacher doesn’t walk around the class to see what the students are writing, you can try drawing in your notebook while the teacher is talking. If you tilt the notebook to your side, it looks like you’re taking notes, even though you’re actually speeding the time. [2] X Research Source
Enjoy your creative time. This method is even more effective than miscellaneous drawing. As long as the teacher doesn’t take a close look at what you’re writing, you’ll look exactly like you’re taking notes. Keep a diary or write a note to a close friend. You can also try writing a short story based on what you observed in the classroom. Tell about the life of that paperclip, for example. [3] X Research Sources
Create rhyme. Try to turn every word the teacher says into a rhyming sentence. For example, if your teacher says, “The climate in Spain is very humid,” you might think in your head, “You know Spain, it rains a lot there.” This also has the benefit of keeping you partially focused on the lecture. [4] X Research Sources
Count every step on the road to freedom. Choose something to count. You can count how many times the teacher uses the word “will” or how many times the teacher says “Attention!” The act of counting will force you to stay awake and help you to ignore the time. [5] X Research Sources

Join the class

Come to class ready to learn. If you do not know anything about the lesson that day, you will be very bored sitting in class because you do not understand the lesson. Time will pass more slowly when we are bored. If you prepare in advance, the class will seem to be more interesting, and the time will also pass faster. [6] X Research Sources

  • Prepare lessons before class, including all reading materials. This will also help you review previous notes to remember where the lesson went while you wait for class to begin. [7] X Research Sources
  • Being physically prepared before class also helps. You should eat a nutritious breakfast or lunch and get enough sleep so you can focus on your lesson while sitting in class. [8] X Research Sources

Interact with teachers and classmates. When you get a chance, speak up in class. Join in as people discuss. If you don’t divide the class into small groups to discuss, at least your teacher will still encourage students to ask and answer questions. Having you actively participate in the lesson instead of being bored and sitting still will help the class seem to go by faster. [9] X Research Source
Improve listening skills. Participating in class is not only about speaking more, but also about listening better. [10] X Research Source

  • Try to ignore sounds other than the teacher’s lecture or when classmates speak. As such, try not to pay attention to sounds like pencils tapping behind your back, scraping paper next to you, or honking cars outside the classroom. You need to force your mind to focus on the teacher’s lecture. [11] X Research Source
Take notes effectively. Taking notes is not an innate skill. You have to learn how to take good notes, and this takes practice. Luckily, you always have time to do this while at school. [12] X Research Source

  • Focus on the main points. You can’t write down every word your teacher says, unless you bring a laptop to class and are able to type extremely fast. This means you need to focus on writing the main ideas. The teacher will help you by highlighting the most important things a few times, maybe even telling you what to write. [13] X Research Source
  • Besides, you should also pay attention to the words the teacher wrote on the board or displayed on the projection screen. Surely you know that these are important points.
Try to express yourself in your own way. One way to help your brain work in class is to think of your “dream person” or someone you like. You can recall memories or take notes in your own words. If you just write down exactly what the teacher says, you probably haven’t really absorbed the information. However, if you try to put it into your own words, you will be busier and learn more at the same time. [14] X Research Source

  • For example, if your teacher says, “One of the great wars of the 20th century was World War II,” you might write, “Great war, 20th century, World War II.” . You don’t need to write the whole sentence, just write the main idea.
  • Do not hesitate to use abbreviations to write more information. [15] X Research Source

Break the boredom

Divide class time into sections. When you look at the overall length of the class, you will see that time seems to go on forever. But when you break the class into smaller chunks, it’s easier to get through the short periods of time. You’re only doing this in your head, of course, but this little game will help you feel the class go by faster. [16] X Research Source

  • For example, you can divide class time into “starting class”, “absorbing information”, “taking notes”, “taking home notes” and “preparing to leave”. You can even write these sections out and cross them out once you’ve passed each section. Another way is to divide the study time into certain time periods, such as the first 15 minutes, the second 15 minutes, and so on.

Find out what causes you to feel bored in class. Write down things that make you uncomfortable or bored at school. Maybe it’s because you don’t like certain subjects. Maybe it’s just because you don’t like sitting for long periods of time. Maybe you just can’t stand being speechless for that period of time. Write down all of those causes, whatever they are. Try to find a solution to the problem. If you can’t sit still for too long, ask your teacher if you can give the class a few minutes in between to do some stretching. That way you can exercise more. If you get bored with certain subjects, find something you enjoy in that subject. For example, you may hate history, but you may find it more interesting to read specific stories about characters from that period than to study in general terms. [18] X Research Sources

  • You can’t change all the things you don’t like about school, but you can change a few things. Don’t be afraid to talk to your teacher about things that might help you. Some teachers may disagree with the change, but many will be happy to do everything they can to help their students. [19] X Research Source
  • If you want to approach the teacher to suggest something, you need to remember to do this outside of class. Try going to the teacher after school. You can say, “Hello, sir. I have come to ask you for a favor. I know the class time is short, but I was thinking if the class can take a short break in between. I can focus more if I get a little exercise. I’m sure the rest of you do too. I understand if you disagree, but I hope you think about it.”

Challenge yourself. Sometimes you can get a little bored waiting for the other students to catch up. If so, you can ask your teacher to give you something more difficult in the meantime. Teachers can give you a certain task to exercise your brain and entertain you. [20] X Research Source
  • Advice

    • Ask your teacher’s permission before using your phone or taking another subject.
    • Should listen when the teacher says something important.
    • Sometimes begging to go to the bathroom just to be out for a few minutes. However, many teachers do not like this because it can create a “chain reaction”, in which one person asks to go out and one after another imitates it. You also try not to do this when it’s almost time for class or just entering the classroom after the break, because the teacher will say “You should have gone during recess” or “You can go when it’s time to break.” .
    • Make sure you don’t get in trouble doodle or do anything for fun.
    • Eating a piece of cake or sucking on a mint is also a way to get your brain out of boredom and from having to constantly look at the clock, but make sure the teacher allows it!
    • Try not to think about how boring and lengthy school is.
    • Complete as many missions as possible. Sometimes you get called up without knowing what the teacher is saying, so you need to make sure you don’t get too distracted during class.
    • You can squeeze the health ball to get rid of the boredom.
    • Try drawing on a leg or palm, but make sure your teacher doesn’t see you doing it.
    • Try having a HAPPY talk with the classmate sitting next to you as the teacher walks out of the classroom. Don’t say it out loud, you might get caught.
    • It’s best to stay focused on the lesson, as time often goes by very quickly, and you’ll soon realize that class is over. But if you don’t understand the lesson, try and take notes so you can review everything later and understand.
    • Try not to look at the clock while in class. Try directing your mind to something else, like a good book.
