Choose the shape to make the piñata. You can make piñata with any shape you like. The easiest is to make the piñata with the long sphere of the bubble but you can also make any other shape you want.

  • To make the shape of the piñata more elaborate, stick plain colored paper and cardboard over the balloons.
  • The traditional piñata is made in the shape of a ceramic pot, but this is messy and dangerous. Let’s just make piñata with sticky paper on a malleable shape.
Keep the work area clean. Making piñata can be messy so you need plenty of space to make it. Cover the flat surface with several layers of newspaper or disposable plastic towels. This keeps the work surface clean and easy to clean up after it’s done. You should also wear old clothes or an apron and latex gloves so you don’t get dirty.
Make glue. Mix 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of water, and 1 tablespoon of salt in a bowl. Stir the mixture until it becomes a thick dough. Don’t worry about having to stir up clumps of dough; You need a smooth dough mixture but a little undissolved flour is fine.
Prepare the paper for pasting. Tear off some newspaper about 2.5-5cm wide and 15-20cm long. Thus, the newspaper will be glued neatly on the balloon. You will need several pieces of paper to be able to coat the ball in multiple layers.

Shape the piñata

Blow bubbles. This is the shape of the piñata so blow it so that the ball is nice and big. Balloons are preferable because there’s plenty of room for candy to fit. You can also use a box if you want the piñata to be square. Add other shapes to make legs, arms, tails, beaks, hats out of cardboard, newspaper or cardboard. Glue these shapes onto the piñata with clear tape.
Apply glue to the pieces of paper. Dip the paper in the glue and use your fingers to remove excess glue or pull the paper close to the side of the bowl.
Stick the paper on the ball. Glue the pieces of paper diagonally across each other until the ball is completely covered. However, do not stick paper over the knot of the ball so that you can easily remove the ball. Do this 3 to 4 more times, waiting for the first layer of paper to dry before applying the next layer.

Let the piñata dry. When you have finished gluing the layers of paper, let the piñata dry completely and harden. How long it takes will depend on a lot of factors like the thickness of the paper, humidity, and air temperature. Generally it will take a few days.

Decoration for piñata

Paint the piñata. Use one color to paint the paper and create a flat surface. You don’t have to paint it beautifully, just paint it evenly over the entire surface of the paper. Choose a color that matches your decor or a color that clearly represents the animal or character you want to make.
Glue crepe paper onto the piñata. This makes the piñata look more traditional. In addition, it also creates a sense of celebration and familiarity. Cut or tear the crepe paper into long pieces and stick on the piñata. You can leave the long piece of paper as it is or bundle it up and stick it on the piñata.
Perfecting the piñata. Once you’ve glued the crepe paper, you can add a few details to complete the piñata. Cupcake and light colored paper can be added for tassels. If you’re making an animal, make a big eye for extra fun.

Add candies inside the piñata

Cut a hole in the piñata to add candy. If the balloon hasn’t burst, break it and take it out. Since you didn’t cover the ball’s knot with paper, you already have a small hole.
You can make the hole bigger if needed. If you can’t put candy in, cut the edge of the hole until it’s big enough to fit easily.
Punch 2 small holes right next to the big hole. Tie string or ribbon into the holes to create a loop. This will come in handy in the next step when you need to hang the piñata.
Add things that you like to the piñata. Be it candy, ribbons, stickers, confetti, small toys or whatever you like.

  • Avoid putting candy without wrappers inside.
  • In addition, fragile toys should not be added.

Seal the hole. Stick some crepe paper over the hole or use clear tape to seal it. The goal is to not let the contents of the piñata fall out before you smash it.

Hang piñata. Add a rope, ribbon, or rope to the loop you made earlier to hang the piñata anywhere you want.
  • Advice

    • Don’t just use crepe paper for decoration! Feathers, glitter, and artificial flowers can also be used to decorate the piñata.
    • Use a large rope if your piñata is heavy to hold the piñata steady.
    • You should choose candy that won’t melt before smashing the piñata.
    • Do not use duct tape to make the piñata as it will be difficult to break.
    • Use big bubbles to make a big piñata.
    • Put candy that won’t spoil easily in the piñata.
    • As an alternative to the flour mixture, you can also mix the glue with water but only add a little water so that the glue does not become too thin.
    • Make a party-themed piñata. You can decorate a fish with glossy scales with foil or make flowers from large crepe paper.
    • You can also use a cardboard box if bubbles are not available. Just choose a box that’s not too hard so you can break it easily.
    • You can easily make a heart-shaped piñata by gluing the ends together and wrapping the edges with duct tape (for a stiffer piñata, use the cardboard of a cereal box for the first layer).
    • Use peanut-free candy because you don’t know who will be allergic.
    • Use cork or ice to seal the piñata, it will be more effective when you glue the stone or cork to the piñata.
