The idea of a “good life” has existed since time immemorial. Aristotle and Plato viewed moral and political ideals as means to happiness, and understood that the good life was not built solely on personal values. It involves being nice to others, while remaining comfortable and true to yourself. [1] X Research Source
Steps
Live well with others
- People who smile often are seen as charismatic, trustworthy, laid-back, and sincere. [2] X Research Source
- Motivating yourself by cheering others on is a sign of how to lead a good life. [3] X Research Sources
- Listening to other people’s problems is a great way to help them. Often, the person who is having a hard time simply wants to share his or her situation with friends. By taking the time to listen to them, you are helping them whether or not you solve the problem.
- The Dalai Lama once said, “If you want others to be happy, be compassionate. If you want to be happy yourself, be compassionate.” [5] X Research Source Paying attention to others, rather than yourself, is a popular way to practice being kind to others.
- Taking responsibility for your actions is an important factor in growth. Some situations will be completely out of your control, and focusing on them will not help you develop the ability to make beneficial changes in your life. You should accept what you cannot change; and change what you can.
- Getting rid of resentment towards others is essential to living a good life. There is a saying that resentment is similar to “like drinking poison yourself, and hoping that the other person will die”. [6] X Research Source It will erode your quality of life, destroy relationships with those around you.
- Others may not agree with you. This doesn’t mean you or the other person is wrong, it’s just that the two of you have different views on the same topic – and this is completely normal.
- To speak the truth cautiously is the habit of people with a good life. Often, people try to pretend that they are telling the truth about others when in fact they are just spreading rumors. The attention you get when you share the rumor will feel pretty good for a short time. However, in the long run, it will destroy healthy relationships between you and the people around you. - Before taking action, you should consider “Is this what I would like others to say about me, or do for me?”. If the answer is no, you should reconsider your behavior.
- Let your friends and family know that you care by spending time with them, calling often, and doing something together. However, friendship is not based on distance. Even online friends have a positive effect on your quality of life. [10] X Research Source
- People with strong social networks have stronger immune systems, fewer colds, less stress, and a higher overall quality of life for reasons as yet unknown. [11] X Research Source
Live well with yourself
- When problems arise, take a look at yourself. Avoid blaming others. They won’t like this, and you won’t learn from it either.
- Talk about the situation with someone you trust. Often, a friend will have insight into motives that you yourself cannot distinguish.
- Make a list of qualities you want to emulate in your life. Then, make a list of ways to use them in your daily life. Aristotle once wrote, “We are the actions that we constantly perform. Therefore, excellence is not a virtue, but a habit”. [12] X Research Source If you want to be kind, do kind things.
- Learning how to be honest about what you want can be difficult. Many people prevent themselves from having the good life by overemphasizing what they want, but feel like they can’t get it because of other life circumstances – like finances, obligations. family, economic pressure, etc. This only perpetuates the idea that the person is the victim, which will gradually destroy happiness on all levels.
- If you don’t know your biggest desire for life, you should start with a smaller choice. Developing control and power over what you have in life is crucial to being able to have a good life. [13] X Research Source
- Sometimes, re-reading your fear will help you realize the futility of worrying about something that is not in your control.
- Sometimes, the fear will be based on the situation that is no longer present. Many people develop a feeling of fear in childhood, and the condition is completely beyond their conscious control. But as an adult, the person possesses more autonomy and power over his or her choices. By becoming aware of the fear driving their behavior, you can make more conscious decisions about your own behavior.
- Self-acceptance is a lesson in honesty. It means that the person does not deny his actions, passivity, or results. [15] X Research Source
- Self-acceptance is the process of practicing self-reliance. Like any other manifestation of self-reliance, self-acceptance is something you need to consciously learn, and relearn as your personality changes over time.
- Admit when you worry about the future, or regret the past. Redirect your attention to the rhythm of your breathing. Count to 10. When practiced regularly, even a simple mindfulness exercise like this can have a positive effect on your life.
- Cultivate a daily routine, instead of setting goals that are too far-fetched. For example, you should exercise every day, rather than trying to complete a triathlon in a month. Instead of losing about 10 kg, you should eat healthy from today. If you decide to set a goal, break it down into manageable chunks each day.
Expressed gratitude
- Making a list of everything you’re grateful for, big or small, is a way to help people actively cultivate their gratitude in their daily lives. Many people choose to keep a gratitude journal as the old adage says “count your blessings”. Others will think of a list of all the elements they thank for having in their daily prayer or meditation.
- Posting pictures or text reminders of gratitude around your home is another way to remind yourself to be grateful.
- You can send a thank you note for anything, big or small. A thank you letter can be as small as an emoji, or as a detailed letter about a big event in someone’s life.
- Sometimes, that person will no longer be present in your life. One way to show your gratitude is through writing a thank you letter for their positive influence on your life. While you probably won’t be able to send it, the act of writing the letter will help.
- You can set an alarm to remind you to be grateful at a random time of the day. When the alarm clock rings, ask yourself: what am I grateful for right now? [20] X Research Sources
- If you find yourself having thoughts of resentment or complaint, you should try to replace it with gratitude. [21] X Research Source For example, when you are stuck in traffic, you should replace worrying about being late for your next task with an observation of the beauty of nature. Anyway, you will miss the beauty of autumn colors in the trees if you are driving at normal speed!
