Flubber is a fun movie played by Robin Williams in 1997 and it’s also the name of a delightfully handcrafted substance that young children love. Fly plastic often wobbles, is slimy and looks dirty – what more could a child like than this? Creating different types of flying plastic is also fun and simple. Robin Williams would be proud of that.

Put 3/4 cup water with 1 cup glue in a bowl. Stir the mixture until even. Then set the mixture aside.
Place 2 tablespoons Borax powder and 1/2 cup water in another bowl. Stir until Borax powder is completely dissolved.
Mix the two mixtures. Stir the ingredients. Add a few drops of food coloring until the mixture is the color you want.
Place the mixture in a tightly zipped plastic bag. Close the mouth of the bag, making sure the bag is tightly closed. Knead the mixture for a few minutes and your flying plastic is complete. You can store the plastic fly in the bag used for kneading.
Completed.

Making Gak (Borax Powder-free Flying Plastic)

Pour 1 cup of milk pulling into the bowl. Add a few drops of food coloring until you have the color you want.
Pour 1 cup of liquid starch into the glue mixture. Stirred. Once the glue and liquid starch have been stirred well, the mixture will be very thick.
Stir in more liquid starch if the mixture is too sticky. The liquid starch will make the glue stretchy instead of sticky. Note that Gak will stick to clothes and carpets but you can easily remove it by scrubbing with a little warm water.
Store Gak in a container with a tight-fitting lid.

Make edible flying plastic

Pour 1 can (about 400g) of sweetened condensed milk into a small saucepan.

Open the stove on low heat.

  • Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to the pot. Stir the mixture over low heat.
  • Remove the pot from the heat when the mixture begins to thicken. Add a few drops of food coloring until the edible jelly is the color you want. Stir the mixture.
  • Wait for the mixture to cool before playing (or eating). Note that edible flying plastic may leave some light coloration on clothing and carpets. You will have to clean with warm water and detergent.

  • Store edible flying plastic in a zip-lock plastic container or bag.
  • Advice

    • Rinse fly plastic with water if it becomes dirty.
    • Fly plastic can only be stored for 3 weeks. By that point, you’ll find a lot of hair and dirt stuck to the fly plastic so it won’t be fun anymore.

    Warning

    • Borax powder is a poison. Do not swallow and make sure small children do not do the same. Supervise children while making balloons with Borax powder.
