Baking in the oven is a familiar method for many people, but sponge cake can still be made in many other ways. If you don’t have a microwave, you can still make muffins using a gas stove, large pot and steamer or glass baking tray. The finished product will still look like a cake made in the oven, but will be softer and not dry.

Choose and prepare your favorite sponge cake dough. You can use your own sponge cake recipe or use pre-mixed cake batter. Most sponge cake recipes will fit the method in this article. [1] X Research Source

Sprinkle flour into the mold. You will add about 1 tablespoon of flour to each mold you need to use. Discard the remaining flour.

  • If you don’t have enough flour, add about ½ – 1 tablespoon flour to the pan.
Line the wax paper in the mold. You will first place the mold on the stencils, and then use the pen to draw around the bottom of the mold. Next, cut out circles on the stencils, and then place them in the molds.

Pour the cake batter into the mold. Use a spatula to scrape all the dough into the mold. If you’re using more than one pan, make sure the batter is evenly distributed. Gently shake the mold to spread the dough evenly in the mold.

Prepare a pot and steamer or a glass baking tray. The steamer should have a flat bottom and bottom legs to keep the bottom from touching the pot, or a handle for the steamer to fit snugly over the top of the pot.
