What You Need To Make Beaded Charm Straps
- Beads
- String
- Scissors
These phone charm straps are super customizable, so you can use whatever beads you like and whatever string you want. I have all of my left over materials from making my Pura Vida-inspired bracelets and my Letter Bead Bracelets, so that’s what I used.
String Call Out*
I do want to call out that you want whatever string you use to be more on the thin side (~1mm) so that it can attach to your phone case.
Also, I don’t recommend using a stretchy elastic string if you plan on using the strap to secure the phone, but it would definitely be okay if you are using the phone charm strap as a decoration. I used a wax string that is super strong and I melted the knots so they are extra secure.
How To Make Beaded Phone Charm Straps
Like I mentioned, these beaded phone charm straps are extremely customizable and you can also customize how long you want your strap to be.
I like to use my strap to also help stabilize my phone in my hand and wear around my wrist, so I adjusted the overall length to end up at ~5.5″. Adjust your strap to however feels comfortable for you.
Cut your string to 15″ and fold in half
Feel free to cut your string to be longer at this point if you think you want a longer beaded phone charm strap. If you decide later that you want it to be shorter, you can always trim off the excess when securing the beads.
Tie a knot ~1″ down from the folded end
This creates a loop in the string at the center which will be used to attach the beaded phone charm strap to your phone later. If you are using bigger/chunkier beads, you may want to create a slightly larger loop so it’ll be easier to attach to the phone.
Add beads to each half of the charm strap
As you add beads, the end of your string may start to fray. With the waxed string, you should be able to smooth the frayed ends together just with the warmth of your fingers, or you can trim the ends off to get a sharper edge.
I used my seed beads left over from my Seed Bead Bracelets and my Letter Bead Bracelets, but you can use any beads you want. Most beaded charm straps have chunkier pony beads in a 90s/2000s style. You can get variety packs of beads online, at a craft store, or even at a dollar store.
I found a lot of chunky bead sets on Amazon that look really cute. Here’s a beaded phone charm strap I made with chunkier beads:
If you are using chunkier beads, check to make sure that they aren’t so big that they can slide over the knotted loop end. If your beads are too large to be stopped by the knot, use a smaller bead first to prevent the other beads from sliding off.
There is no reason why these beaded phone straps should cost $100+.
Tie a knot to secure both ends of the beaded phone strap together + trim excess string
Once the phone strap is the length you want, tie both beaded ends together, double knot it, and trim off the excess string. I joined my ends when each half of beads was ~5.5″ long.
Tie your knot with a tiny bit of extra space so your beads have a little room to slide. You don’t want to tie the knot so closely to the beads that they are super tight and rigid.
If you are using a wax string, trim off the ends and then use a lighter to melt the ends for extra security and for a cleaner look.

How To Attach Beaded Charm Straps to Your Phone
To attach your beaded charm strap to your phone, you’ll need any phone case that has a cutout.
I have an iPhone 8 Plus and I attach my beaded charm straps through the sound/mute cutout. You can use the charging cutout or the speaker cutouts too. This should work with most phone cases, but keep in mind that wherever you attach it, will put extra stress on that part of the case. So always be careful if/when you hold your phone just by the strap.
Remove your phone from the case
Feed the beaded charm strap loop through the cutout on your phone
Pull the end of your beaded charm strap through the loop end
Replace your phone and enjoy
