Purchase fine iron oxide (rust) powder, aluminum powder, and a thin strip of magnesium. Iron oxide and aluminum will react with each other to form aluminum thermos, while magnesium will act as the ignition material. If this is a basic aluminum thermoset experiment, you will need 3g of aluminum powder and 9g of iron oxide.

  • Do not pulverize metals yourself, as this is dangerous. You can buy metal powder in a jar at a chemical store or online. Alternatively, you can get aluminum powder in the Etch-a-Sketch drawing board.
  • If you don’t want to use magnesium strips as a igniter, you can also use a mixture of potassium permanganate (permanganate) and glycerin, both available at retail stores and online.
