Hand washing. It is important first that hands and tools are clean so that the gel does not become contaminated.
Cut off the outer leaves of the aloe plant. The outer leaves are usually older. They contain lots of fresh and healthy gels. Look for leaves that grow on the outside of the plant, whose stalks are close to the ground. Use a sharp knife to cut close to the stem.

  • Aloe vera gel is very perishable, so it’s best not to make a lot at once unless you intend to give someone else a portion. Especially if the leaves are large, you only need to cut one or two leaves to make 1/2 to 1 cup of gel.
  • Take special care not to cut too many leaves at once if your plant is young. Cutting off all the outer leaves can kill the plant.

Let the leaf sap melt for 10 minutes. Place the leaves upright in the cup so that the dark yellow sap flows out. This resin contains latex, which may cause mild skin irritation. It is best to let the resin melt, to avoid mixing in the gel.
Stripping leaves. Use a vegetable peeler to carefully strip away the green part of the leaves. [1] X Research Source Make sure to cut to the white inner layer with gel underneath. Strip off the entire leaf on one side, leaving half a concave leaf filled with gel.

  • If there are large leaves, you should cut them into smaller pieces before stripping.
  • Discard the leaves so that they do not get mixed in the gel.
Use a spoon to scoop out the gel. The soft, transparent gel is easy to scoop. Scoop out the gel into a clean bowl.

Consider mixing the gel with a natural preservative. If you have a lot of gel and want to store it for a month or two, mix about 1/4 cup of the gel with 500mg of powdered Vitamin C or 400 IU of vitamin E. Place ingredients in a blender and puree. The gel will look very fluffy at first. [2] X Research Source
Pour the gel into a clean, sterilized glass jar. If you use a preservative, you can keep the gel in the refrigerator for several months. Otherwise, the shelf life will be a week or two.
  • Use gels. Apply the gel to sunburns or minor superficial burns. Aloe vera can also be used as a skin conditioner or as an ingredient in homemade body products.

    • Never apply aloe vera to deep cuts or blisters. Only use on irritated skin surfaces as they can make deep cuts difficult to heal.
    • Try mixing 1/2 cup of aloe vera with 1/4 cup of liquid coconut oil to create a soothing and moisturizing massage cream. [3] X Research Sources

  • Advice

    • If you don’t have powdered vitamin C, you can crush a vitamin C tablet and sprinkle it on the gel. A few drops of grapefruit extract has the same effect.

    Warning

    • Aloe vera can be eaten but should not be taken in excess as it has a laxative effect.
    • Wear gloves when handling aloe vera if you are sensitive to the latex.
