Pom poms come in several different varieties. Some are used to decorate crocheted items, some are used in cheerleading dances, and some are made from tissue paper used to decorate homes. You can make one or all of these three types of tassel balls if the right materials are available.

Steps

Make a tassel ball with wool

Cut 2 circles out of cardboard. Cut 2 cardboard circles, then cut a fan-shaped slit and a small hole in the center of each to make it look like a saucer with a keyhole in the middle. Remember that the bigger the circle, the bigger your sphere will be (and vice versa). [1] X Research Source

  • You can cut freely into a circle if you are skillful, or use a cup or bowl to draw the outline in a circle, then cut it out.
Place a yarn between the two pieces of cardboard. Place a thread of yarn around the keyhole of one piece of cardboard and place the other piece of cardstock on top of the yarn. Arrange two circles so that the two keyholes coincide. [2] X Research Source

  • This yarn has the role of fastening the tassel ball afterwards. Remember that the yarn should be long enough for the ends to stick out on either side of the keyhole. [3] X Research Sources
Wrap the yarn around the circle. Thread the yarn through the fan-shaped opening in the center of the round hole, then start wrapping the yarn several times around the circle. Wrap about 100 loops or until the loops are the desired thickness. [4] X Research Sources

  • The thicker the wool, the thicker the ball of wool.

Cut the wool loops. Slip the nose between two pieces of circular cardboard and cut the loops around the outer edge of the circle. Cut slowly and evenly weigh both sides. [5] X Research Sources

  • When cutting the yarn, hold the end of the yarn that you placed between the two pieces of cardboard. This yarn will help fasten the sphere.
Tie the tassel. Tie and knot the ends of the yarn in between the two pieces of cardboard. The yarn that you originally placed between the two pieces of cardboard is in the perfect position to tie the tassel ball. [6] X Research Sources
Remove the two round pieces of cardboard. After tying the tassel ball in the center, you can remove the two pieces of cardboard. Remember that you can reuse these cardboard pieces to make more tasseled orbs, so don’t throw them away. [7] X Research Sources
Cut the tassel ball. Trim around the tassel ball evenly. Continue trimming until you are satisfied with the shape of the tasseled sphere. Your fringe ball will be fluffy, thick, and evenly rounded after trimming. [8] X Research Sources

  • Don’t cut off the ends of the yarn you used to tie the tassel ball, unless you don’t need it anymore.

Use the finished tassel orb. Now you can attach the finished tassel ball to your crocheted items for a beautiful decoration. Tie the yarn end of the tassel ball to attach to a hat, scarf, sweater or whatever you like.

Make cheering tassels

Stack 10 garbage bags on top of each other. [9] X Research Source Trash bags are usually only available in white and black, but you can find other colors as well. If you use multiple bags of different colors, arrange the layers of colors alternately for harmony.
Cut off the bottom and top ends of garbage bags. Cut an inch or two off the top of the trash bag, under the drawstring, and throw away the excess. [10] X Research Sources[11] X Research Sources
Double the bag. Fold the stack of garbage bags so that the bottom edge coincides with the top edge. Try to line up the bags so that they are as straight and even as possible. [12] X Research Source
Cut the trash bags along the fold line. Cut the stack of trash bags along the folded line so that you will have a stack of 20 square trash bags. Cut carefully and try not to get jagged edges. [13] X Research Source
Cut the garbage bags into several strips. Cut from the edge of the bag to the center, starting from the edge you just cut. Cut the bag into strips 1.5-2.5 cm apart as you like. Cut similarly with the opposite edge. Cut both ends so that the strips are even, and leave about 5cm in the middle uncut. [14] X Research Source
Bundle of cut trash bags. Holding a stack of garbage bags like a bunch of dry noodles, grabbing the middle (uncut part) and letting go of the cut ends. Wrap tape (wire tape is best) around the middle of the trash bag. [15] X Research Source
Loosen the tassel ball. Hold each strip of plastic to separate to loosen. Thus, the tassel ball will inflate. Twist the nylon strips after separating to make the tassel ball even thicker. [16] X Research Source

  • So your tassel ball is ready! Let’s make one more tassel ball to make a pair.

Make a tassel ball with tissue paper

Stack 8 sheets of tissue paper on top of each other. Lay the sheets of tissue paper on a flat surface so that all the edges of the paper coincide.

  • You can use less tissue paper to make small tassel balls, or use more paper to make larger, thicker tassel balls. [17] X Research Source
Fold the stack of paper vertically in a fan-folding fashion. Start folding at one end of the stack of tissue paper in a fan-fold fashion, that is, fold one fold of paper on one side, then turn over to fold the next fold on the other side. Continue folding in this fashion until the other end of the stack of tissue paper. [18] X Research Sources

  • If you want to make a small tassel ball, cut the strips of paper in half after folding it into a fan shape. So you will have 2 stacks of shorter strips of paper to make 2 tassel balls. [19] X Research Source
Cut both ends of the folded stack of paper. You can cut diagonally for pointed ends or cut round. The shape of the tassel will depend on the cut you choose.
Fasten in the center of the folded stack of papers. Use a piece of fishing line, wire, or thick thread to tie around the center of the folded paper. Make sure the rope is long enough that you can use it to hang the tassel ball when you’re done. [20] X Research Source
Use your hands to open each layer of paper. [21] X Research Source Gently unfold the paper layers in turn to avoid tearing. However, small tears will not be easily noticeable, so you do not need to start over if you accidentally tear one or two times. [22] X Research Source

Hang the tassel ball. After spreading the tassel ball, you can hang it to decorate the house. Hang the globe on a hook on the wall or ceiling. [23] X Research Sources
