How to Make a Scarecrow

Use canvas. Burlap used to protect plants or to store potatoes and coffee beans are suitable for making scarecrow heads. You will make the scarecrow head out of burlap as follows:

• Stuff multiple plastic bags into one large plastic bag until the shape is about the size of a head.
• Place the bag in the center of the burlap, then cut a large circle around the bag. You don’t have to measure or cut a perfect circle.
• Grab the burlap wrapped around the plastic bag and place it on top of the wooden stand (the scarecrow’s neck) before securing it with wire or string.

Use pumpkin. The type of pumpkin that is often made into lanterns will help you create a scarecrow head just in time for the festive season. First, you choose a beautiful, round pumpkin. Cut a large round hole in the top of the pumpkin (around the stem) and scrape out the flesh inside. Use a sharp knife to carve out the face contours of the scarecrow. Attach the bottom of the pumpkin to the scarecrow’s neck and secure with glue or tape if needed.

• Don’t put the candle inside the pumpkin as you usually do with the pumpkin lantern because the other materials you use to make the scarecrow are very flammable.
• Other vegetables like zucchini and radish can be used to make a scarecrow’s head.
• Note that pumpkins and other vegetables all rot after a while. If you want to keep the scarecrow’s head longer, you can try another method.

Use pillowcases. Pillowcases are another option for making a scarecrow’s head, and you can always find a pillowcase at home. You will make the scarecrow’s head out of a pillowcase like this:

• Stuff in straw or other material to half-fill the pillowcase.
• Use a pin to secure the mouth of the pillowcase so that the material inside doesn’t fall out, but don’t close it completely.
• Attach the scarecrow’s head to a wooden stand (the scarecrow’s neck).
• Push until the end of the stick touches the top edge of the pillowcase, through the straw.
• Fasten the pillowcase to the wooden bar with wire or wire, then cut off the excess fabric and remove the tape.

Use other tools. There are many items that you can use to make a scarecrow’s head. If you want to keep the cost of making a scarecrow to a minimum, just use whatever you have in the house. See the following suggestions:

• Use a black marker to draw the scarecrow’s eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cut a few triangles from the felt fabric to make the eyes and nose. You can sew or glue these pieces of fabric with glue on the head of the scarecrow.
• Use colored buttons of different sizes to make eyes, nose and mouth. Sew or glue the button with glue.
