Making a chalkboard is a fairly simple craft idea and can be done with special board paint. To create a durable and practical chalkboard, you’ll also need to use an old photo frame and plywood or MDF (medium-density fiberboard). Learn how to make your own chalkboard quickly and easily, start with step 1 below.
Steps
Framework
- Any picture frame will help, so you can recycle old frames you no longer use or go to a thrift store to buy a cheap and thick wooden frame.
- When choosing a frame, it is best to use a frame that still has a kickstand. The kickstand may not be necessary, but it will help keep the board in place later.
- You won’t be using the glass to make your chalkboard, but if you love crafting, keep the glass in stock so you can use it for something else.
- If you’re using a standard-sized picture frame, you can also keep the glass as a good replacement in case the other frame’s glass breaks.
- If you decide to remove the glass, be careful to make sure it won’t hurt anyone. You can recycle or throw it away. If you want to throw away the glass, wrap it in a rag or laminated plastic bag. If the glass breaks, these layers will prevent the shards from cutting into anyone who takes out the trash.
- Temporarily remove the kickstands to prevent them from getting dirty or damaged.
- After polishing the frame, continue to wipe away dirt and other stains with a clean, dry cloth. Even if you don’t need to polish the frame, it’s still a good idea to use a clean cloth to remove dust and stains.
- The primer will prevent the color underneath the paint from showing and at the same time create a surface to paint.
- If you do not intend to paint the frame or just want to apply a fresh coat of the same color, then a primer will not be necessary.
- However, a primer will be needed if you plan to paint the frame in a light color, especially if the dark color is underneath.
- Spread newspaper or plastic wrap to prevent you from getting paint on the floor.
- You can use spray paint to make coating faster and easier.
- You can also use wood stain paint as long as the frame is made of natural wood. Wood should not be primed before using dye paint and should be used with a soft-bristled paint brush.
- Paint or paint should be applied on newspaper or plastic wrap to prevent the paint from sticking to the floor.
- Paint or dye paint according to the wood grain, not against the wood grain.
- Allow the coat or paint to dry one layer at a time.
Create a chalkboard
- If using a new picture frame, remove the paper that is nesting in the picture frame and sketch the outline of the paper on the wooden board. You can also sketch the glass panel mounted inside the frame.
- If only the old frame is available without the glass, use a ruler or tape measure to measure the space behind the frame. Draw a rectangle of the same size on the board. The size of the gap on the front of the frame should not be used.
- Plywood will also work without MDF boards.
- If you can’t do this yourself, take this size to a hardware store and have a lumberjack saw the board for you.
- After cutting the board, use sandpaper to remove any flaking. You can also use sandpaper to sand down some parts of the board if it doesn’t fit the frame.
- Primer makes it easier for the paint to stick to the surface of the board.
- Use a larger sponge or standard paint brush.
- Blackboard paint is applied to develop the surface texture of the board while it dries. You can also use chalk to write on it right after. 2 coats of paint will create stronger resistance.
- A flat topcoat will reduce the amount of ripples that form on the surface after the paint dries.
- Let the paint dry layer by layer.
- If the kickstand fits inside the frame and secures the board, add it behind the board to help secure the board.
- If not using a kickstand, use tape or masking tape to attach the back of the board to the back of the frame.
- Hang the chalkboard on a hook that attaches to the base of the frame. If not, you can use a large stapler to attach thick twine or thin rope to the top two corners of the frame and hang the board on a hook using this rope.
Make a creative board
- The sheet metal should be the same size as the plywood sheet if you want to create a regular chalkboard.
- You need to use gloves when handling the metal plate to avoid being cut.
- Use the brackets of the frame or other part of the board to secure the sheet metal.
- Do not attempt to spray paint on the board with magnet paint before applying paint. The two layers of paint will reject each other, so the magnet paint will no longer be effective after you apply the panel paint.
- Use super glue or other strong adhesive.
- Lightly polish the surface and, if necessary, use duct tape to cover any areas that you don’t want the paint to stick to.
- If you need some creative surface ideas, consider using enameled trays, old cabinet doors, old mirrors, glass window panes, or trash cans.
- Note that this is not a durable chalkboard. This method should only be used when you do not use the chalkboard very often.
