We only have one life to live, so we have to enjoy every moment of it. However, it is not always easy to achieve that desire. Sometimes you have to make an effort to look on the positive side to find happiness. Fortunately, you can do as much in your power to take a more optimistic view of any situation.
Steps
Have a positive mindset
- Leave a reminder in your phone or post a note next to your bed so it’s the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning. You can write something like “Have fun!” or “Good morning!” A simple smiley face drawing is also an effective reminder.
- Laughter is a miracle cure for stress, and it’s really good for our health – especially the heart, lungs, and muscles.
- Besides keeping a healthy lifestyle, taking care of yourself also includes relaxing activities, having fun with friends, pursuing hobbies, listening to music or anything else that makes you feel good about life.
- For example, when you’re faced with a difficult situation, instead of thinking, “I can’t do it,” you might think, “I’d love to try something new.”
- When you’re feeling lonely, you can replace the thought “No one likes me” with something like, “I’m going to spend the whole evening contacting my old friends.”
- For example, today you may be grateful for a bowl of pho while inhaling its aroma, tomorrow you will be grateful for the beautiful view from outside your bedroom window.
- One benefit of journaling is that, when you have an unlucky day, you can turn the pages of your diary and read it again. Joting things in your journal will lift your spirits, and it will remind you to notice the things you’ll be grateful for that day.
- For example, you can spend time listening to music, reading, journaling, playing sports, doing crafts, or gardening.
- Sometimes taking care of yourself is as simple as recognizing when you’re exhausted and knowing when to rest.
- Don’t be afraid to try something new – your preferences may change after a few months, and this is completely normal!
- Be aware of something that you can perceive with one of the five senses. For example, you might notice the feeling of your feet on the carpet, the sound of traffic outside your window, the smell of a burning candle, the taste of the water you’re drinking, and the picture on the wall. - When you eat, take it slow and savor every bite. Pay attention to the taste of the dish and its association with other elements of the meal. Pay attention to the texture of the food as well.
- Inhale deeply and slowly through your nose, paying attention to the sensation of air filling your chest and abdomen. Then, exhale slowly through your mouth and notice how your body feels as the air leaves your lungs.
- This can energize you so you’re ready to take on the trouble. You will solve problems much faster if you can face challenges instead of running away.
Find your purpose
- What suffering do you wish to alleviate on this planet?
- What keeps you energized and excited?
- How do you want people to remember you?
- What do you think is the truly enjoyable way to enjoy life?
- Try breaking down big goals into smaller, easier-to-follow steps. For example, if you’re not in shape, but one of your goals is to run a marathon, you could start by setting a goal of walking 30 minutes a day for a week. Once you’ve reached this goal, you can set a goal of running for 5 minutes in each walking session. Keep doing this until you reach the finish line!
- Remember that your values may change over time, so your goals may change as well. Check back from time to time to make sure you’re still on the right track that feels right for you.
- For example, if you’ve often dreamed of having a different career, you might find a way to schedule night classes no matter how busy you are.
- Other ways to learn new things might include signing up for online courses, cooking a new recipe, or learning a new pastime. [9] X Trusted Source Greater Good Magazine Go to Source
- You can also find learning opportunities in everyday life situations. For example, if you just ended a friendship with someone, take a look at yourself to see if there was something you could have handled differently, or was there a mistake that you could later make. avoid in friendship relationship no.
- For example, if you feel compassion for victims of domestic violence, you could help serve food at a shelter to people who have just come out of that situation.
- If you can’t bear to see animals in distress, you can spend time volunteering at your local animal shelter.
- If your faith belongs to a religion such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam or Buddhism, look for places of worship in the area. This can be a great way for you to meet people of your faith, helping you to bond even more with your beliefs.
Build relationships
- If you don’t have solid social connections yet, try making friends in class, at work, or online. You can also find old friends you haven’t contacted for a long time.
- To meet new people, you can go to community events such as concerts, fundraisers and public gatherings.
- This doesn’t mean you have to accept bad behavior or maintain toxic relationships. However, once you have a realistic view of people, you will know how to set reasonable boundaries with them.
- While you should try to find the good in others, don’t ignore reality. For example, if you have a friend who is generous and gives you a sense of self-satisfaction, but they often brag, you should believe only a part of what they say, even if you still appreciate their good sides. - Plus, if you have close friends, you’ll have someone to celebrate with you when good things come your way!
- Don’t forget to listen attentively when your friends need your presence.
- Try not to stick to a win-lose mindset in every disagreement. This is not a competition – the best-case scenario is for both sides to feel heard.
- If you feel like your anger is about to flare up, suggest taking a break for about 5 minutes to calm down before returning to the issue.
- Understand that you may not have a good relationship with everyone. If someone regularly makes you feel bad about yourself around them, it may be best to distance yourself from that person or even end the relationship.
Advice
- For a quick boost at any time, decorate your home with things that make you smile, like fun artwork or colorful rugs.
- Then you will have unlucky days or sad days that no matter what you do, you can’t be happy. No problem! Everyone has days like that. Take care of yourself and let the day pass.
