In fact, we all know that life is a balance between joy and its opposite emotions – sadness, boredom and discontent, for example. However, there are things you can do to increase your happiness in your relationships, at work, and with yourself. Set more realistic expectations, be forgiving, and stay optimistic. Love the whole person of the other half, even the bad sides. When you’re committed to someone, you have to accept their flaws as well as their great points. It can be frustrating when your partner doesn’t know how to fit into parties, or they don’t know how to fry eggs, but when it comes to love, don’t expect to change them. Maybe they will change and maybe not. But if your expectations don’t match reality, it’s you who will be disappointed.

  • Trying to change your lover will lead to more disagreements. You might hurt their ego.
  • Realize that: love is accepting the person for who you are and they will accept you for who you are. Instead of focusing on the things you want them to change, you should be grateful for finding someone who accepts the “bad” side of you.

Let go of fairy fantasies. Many scientific studies show that people who believe in ‘Cinderella’ romance will have difficulty accepting the truth about love. [1] X Research Source Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Happiness is not a destination, it is a journey.” If you want to find someone who meets your utopian requirements, chances are you’ll be very disappointed. Talk to your partner about what makes you happy, and find out what makes them happy, too.

  • Realize that: fairy-tale versions of love are only found in movies, they do not reflect reality. After a brilliant wedding will be stressful and difficult days. That is real life.
  • Love can be so magical. But in reality, they do not exist solely on the basis of miracles but also on hard work, especially after the first few years.

Let’s keep the love passionate with surprises for each other. The initial flame of passion may wane a bit after a few years of washing the dishes together, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely extinguished. Studies show that surprising your partner by creating new hobbies and experimenting with new things helps keep each other interesting. When the two of you surprise each other, you will feel the same jitters in your stomach as when you first met. [2] X Research Source

  • The usual dating activities are fine, but you should try new things as well.
  • Don’t feel sad knowing that the initial fascination doesn’t last forever. Many couples have found that they appreciate the deep trust and companionship of their partner after several years of ups and downs, and that’s more than the joy of a first kiss.

Always be ready to make efforts to strengthen love. Every couple will go through hardships such as job loss, illness, bereavement, parenting and financial difficulties. All of those situations will put a strain on love. When encountering such obstacles, try to overcome them, and thanks to that, the two of you will be stronger than ever. Even then, you completely disagree with your lover, but don’t let the love and respect you have for them fade away.

  • Research shows that couples who have a habit of saying offensive words when arguing will cause permanent damage to the relationship. [3] X Research Sources
  • Instead, argue in good faith; Let’s focus on talking about the issues at hand instead of lashing out at each other’s abilities or intelligence.

Try to get along with each other. This is quite difficult, because no relationship is perfect, and you have to always put in the effort. You can completely improve a relationship instead of finding a new lover. It is difficult to take an objective view of private matters. Use some of the following criteria to assess how compatible you two are:

  • Trust: It can be difficult if you don’t share some basic values. That’s not to say that people with different beliefs can’t live happily together, but often they will have to work harder than others.
  • Politics: Political beliefs are deeply core values, so differences in political views will reveal differences in how you see the world.
  • Social: If your other half likes to go out every night and you just like to cuddle books at home, it will be difficult for the two of you to find common interests to maintain love.
  • Finances: Up to half of divorces stem from financial disagreements. If one person is working hard to become a billionaire, and the other just needs a small house and likes to take time for a walk, that could be a source of conflict later on.

Don’t live forever in the past. People often say things like, “We don’t talk like we used to,” or “He doesn’t look like the man I married.” In a long-term relationship, you need to be ready for the other person’s growth. We all grow up in life, and you can’t expect someone to behave the same way a decade ago. Similarly, they can no longer look like they did a decade ago. Instead of focusing on what you’ve done together in the past, see who you are now, and focus on what you two will do together in the future.

Don’t depend on anyone for happiness. Love can make us happier, but it can also become a source of sadness. You can still be happy being single. Don’t think that you just have to find the prince or princess of your life to live a happy life, especially when you feel that something is wrong with your love life.

Invest your time in people instead of things. Studies show that spending time with loved ones makes us happier than focusing our energies on making money, fighting for power and possessions. [4] X Research Source When it comes to big decisions, prioritize family time, so you’ll feel happy in the long run.

  • Find ways to spend more time with friends and family. If necessary, plan to see more people.
  • Remember that close friends are just as important as family. If something goes wrong with your family, you can still find joy with your close friends.
  • Helping strangers can also make you feel happier. Each week, help people by volunteering.

Be respect to anything you have. You’ve heard it before, and this is a very important way to make you happier. If you are someone who “stands on this mountain, looks at that mountain”, you are missing out on the opportunity to live happily. Think about the times when you’ve changed jobs, or moved house only to realize: there’s a problem everywhere. Instead of dreaming of other things, appreciate what you have.

  • Make a list of things for which you are grateful. Writing it down will make you realize how happy you are living. Hang that list in a visible place so you can feel happy every day. [5] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source
  • If you don’t know what to write, find ways to add joy to your life. Make new friends, or learn a skill you enjoy. Always be optimistic and don’t be depressed because of unhappy things.

Don’t keep resentment in your heart. If you carry your anger around, it will affect you more than the object you are angry with. Even if you have good reason to be angry at someone, keeping it to yourself won’t make you any happier. When you can’t change the situation, let the problem pass on its own, no matter how difficult it may be.

  • Be forgiving and open. [6] X Research Source Put the little things – like negative comments – aside instead of thinking about it.
  • Let go of feelings of jealousy. You can’t control the other person, but you can control your reaction. It’s normal to feel unhappy from time to time, but if you keep them inside for too long, they’ll make you miserable.

Surround yourself with people who make you feel good. Emotions are contagious. If your friend is a melancholy and whining person, you won’t be happy around them. That doesn’t mean you should suddenly dump them, but most importantly, find people who make you feel relieved and happy.

  • If someone makes you feel bad, talk to them directly. If this doesn’t work, you can end the relationship with the person for your own health and pleasure.

Choose a suitable job. Not everyone can make a living pursuing their passion, and even those people feel dissatisfied at work at times. When it comes to the right job, make sure you feel respect for your boss, that you’re inspired to work, and that your hard work is recognized.

  • Even if it’s not your dream job, you can still feel satisfied. Your work, like everything else in life, will never be perfect. Accept both the good and the bad, what you can and cannot accept, and change if necessary.
  • If you can’t find a job you like, you can find employment counseling services.

Take time to get out. Studies show that spending time outdoors, even for just 20 minutes a day, makes you happier. [7] X Research Source Walking in the park or lounging on the beach are important activities for mental well-being. Don’t think of it as a luxury. That is the need.

  • If you’re new to spending time outdoors, maybe because you’re so busy, it’s time to make it a priority. Make time for a walk before or after work, or you can relax in the evening in your backyard.
  • Find a place close to nature. Crowded streets will not have the same effect as parks.

Move closer to where you work. Many studies show that people who have to work far away are not as happy as those who live close to the company. [8] X Research Sources The difference is so big: if you dare, you should choose a lower-paying casual job, as long as your commute is shorter. It’s a pretty special way to feel happy, if you’re brave enough to do it, of course.

  • A shorter commute will allow you to spend more time with your family, cook a delicious meal, or go out for a walk. All of these activities reduce stress and make you happier.

Get enough sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, you become sensitive to bad things. A comment that you would normally let go of, can now make you cry or lose control. Try to sleep 7 to 8 hours a night for best results. You will feel joyful and ready to face all the difficulties of the day.

Exercise regularly. When you exercise, your body produces endorphins, a hormone that makes you feel better. When you practice regularly, the effect will be enhanced. If you don’t like exercise, try to do it little by little. Try to get to 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise each day, even if it’s just walking.

    • Exercise will also make you more confident and feel more in control of your body.
    • Exercise increases feelings of happiness very effectively, so it is considered one of the effective treatments for depression. [9] X Research Source
  • Advice

    • Do something special for the one you love. Don’t focus too much on the details. The fact that you take the time to do something for them is enough to make both of you happy.
    • Romance is never wrong, unless you’re not romantic at all.
    • Remember: “forever” is a very long time. If 75% of your time is feeling happy, you’ve done better than a lot of people.
    • Romance is a personal thing. Classic gifts like teddy bears or chocolates are great, but a gift that matches your lover’s taste is even better.
