Is IELTS reading difficult? The first time I heard about IELTS reading was in my 10th grade year, at that time I was really shocked and confused when I read 1 IELTS reading article (yes, I panicked when I read the first one, let alone read 3 articles. in 60 minutes). For me at that time, an IELTS reading lesson was a completely different literary world compared to the school program (although I am confident that I am good at English, studying English abc xyz, but in front of IELTS reading, it is completely different. Intimidation). So I started looking online for methods to learn IELTS reading and started practicing.
Steps
Understand the exam structure
IELTS reading only has a certain number of test types such as: Gap filling; Summary; Matching headings; Matching information; True/ False/ Not given…
- Reading Strategies for the IELTS Test
- The Official Cambridge Guide for IELTS
- You print the types of exercises with tips to make those types of exercises into a separate volume “kung fu secrets”. Later, when I switched from reviewing each form to doing a full test, I kept that book close to me, forgot to turn it over and see it.
- Each type of test has its own way of doing the test, if you don’t know how to do that form but jump into the full test immediately, you will find it difficult, quickly discouraged, and low score.
- Thorough understanding of how to do the test types will help the process of doing the test faster, higher scores.
- Each type of lesson will have a different level of difficulty/easy, practicing each form will clearly know which form is weak, then focus on practicing that form, and at the same time, when taking the test, you can choose which lesson to choose based on this strength/weakness. Do it first, do it later.
Learn vocabulary
- Vocabulary for IELTS
- Check your vocabulary for IELTS
- Vocabulary is divided according to common topics in the IELTS exam
- Vocabulary is placed in specific context to help readers understand how to use words.
- I study on Quizlet. There is a collection of vocabulary for IELTS already available, learn in the form of flashcards, very quickly remember vocabulary. Or you can create vocabulary you want to learn.
- It is okay to write down a notebook, open it from time to time to review.
- Can write on stickers in front of desks, refrigerators, etc. (frequently visited places)
- Learn vocabulary in your spare time, for example, when you wake up, read the vocabulary once, read it once at night before going to bed.
- Read newspapers, books, stories…in English, and you will see IELTS words appear in it.
Practice questions
You must complete the above steps to get to this step.
- The Official Cambridge Guide for IELTS
- Cambridge Topics
- At the beginning of practice, you can do 1 exercise in 60 minutes, do 1 exercise per day. When you’re done, check your answers, if you’re wrong, then carefully look at why you’re wrong.
- I find there is a book explaining Ngoc Bach’s Reading answers quite well, which I can refer to.
- After each Test, synthesize good vocabulary and synonyms and antonyms to learn to increase vocabulary.
