Rats are small warm-blooded rodents found almost anywhere in the world. Their large incisors help them chew through everything, and this species can be dangerous indoors because they carry diseases and parasites on their bodies. Most rats often hide in attics, basements, porches, under concrete and behind walls and have the ability to reproduce very quickly. You can get rid of this rodent by calling an exterminator or using traps and prevention yourself.

Breeding cats. This is an excellent predator and a natural enemy of rats. You will still get rid of them indirectly but without much pain. This is just the way to start the natural cycle. A well-skilled cat will clear out the rodents in just a few weeks. However, you need to keep in mind that cats cannot catch mice in attics or behind walls. [1] X Research Source

Determine where the mouse resides. You’ll know where they are when you see rodent droppings or rodent holes in walls, food boxes, insulation, and other places in your home. This is where you will set the trap.

Place rat baits or traps commonly used in rat habitats. You can buy it at home stores and elsewhere if you decide you want to get rid of mice. Note that rat baits do not kill them immediately and can last up to a week. Rats will be in excruciating pain for that week, so you should keep this in mind.

  • Read instructions and warnings carefully. Most rat baits contain warfarin, which causes internal bleeding along with other drugs that kill rats, but can also be harmful to pets and humans.
  • Check traps regularly. Rat carcasses will smell bad if you don’t clean them up right away. Traps are usually more humane than rat baits because the traps can kill rats instantly. However, in some cases, traps only injure the rat so badly that you have to deal with them at the root.

Use sticky board to kill mice. This is a flat wooden board that traps mice until you can kill them. As mentioned above, you need to make sure that you only use sticky boards if you intend to kill mice. They cannot survive and there is no way to remove them from the sticky board. Some will chew their feet to escape the trap and others will get their heads stuck in the glue and suffocate. This is not the most humane way to get rid of rats, but it will work. If you see a mouse stuck in the trap but not dead, you must wear boots to stomp hard to kill them. Alternatively you can use a hard object such as a stick to hit the mouse on the head. Do whatever you can tolerate and then dispose of the dead rat in the trash outside.

Close the lid of the trash can and empty it every time you throw away food. Do not create conditions for mice to enter the house. You should use trash cans, and don’t let trash bags dangle. When disposing of garbage bags, you should put them in a closed waste container or trash can for disposal. If you leave trash around the house, rats will easily get in. [2] X Research Source

Cover food in the house and store it in an airtight container. If you leave food outside, you will attract rats and other pests. Should clean the house and absolutely pay attention to the places where food is stored. If you live in an area that is prone to rodents, such as a city, you should be extra careful. Prevent any possibility of rats from entering your home by sealing holes in walls, doors, and curtains. Check garage doors, chimneys, dryers, and air-conditioning vents, as well as crawl spaces, to ensure that openings are properly sealed on the outside. If the rats find a place to enter the house, they will line the nest and start breeding. The best thing you can do is prevent this from happening.

Don’t care about products that are advertised as being able to “repel mice.” These products often don’t work, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also warned of a non-destructive sound generator that’s claimed to be able to get rid of rats and rodents.

Determine where the mouse resides. Look for these areas by observing where rat droppings or rodent infestations are found. If rats were in there, they’ll come back again. If the rats are in the attic, you should find the access point they use and set the trap there.

Use a non-lethal wire cage to trap and release mice if you don’t want to get rid of them. Experts see this as a humane way to repel mice. [5] X Research Source Prepare the cage and put some food inside. The trapdoor will trap mice as soon as they crawl into the cage. Then you will have to take the cage away and release the mouse elsewhere.

Release the mouse away from the house. Bring them into the woods away from the house. You don’t want to have to worry about them finding their way back home. Rats will find a new home in another location, hopefully not inhabited by humans.

Think carefully about any poisons or chemicals that employees may want to use. Some types can be harmful to pets and other people living in the home, especially young children. If children or pets come into contact with rat baits, they can become seriously ill and die.

Ask the rat exterminator to clean up dead rats in your home caused by baits. They can cause unpleasant odors in the home if left in the walls or attic. Most rat exterminators will do it for free, but if you don’t want to see a rat carcass, you should ask them to do it for you. Hopefully the staff will complete the entire process from start to finish.

Learn about warranties and guarantees. You don’t want to have to call an exterminator again in a month or two if the rats reappear, or haven’t cleared the house of rats yet. Choose a company that offers a satisfaction guarantee so that you can get your money back if the problem is not completely resolved. At least the rat exterminator should come back and get the job done, but at no extra charge.
  • Advice

    • Clean up dead rats quickly if you choose to kill them
    • Always keep pets and children away from rat baits
    • Try to prevent the problem in the first place instead of having to deal with mice in your house or apartment.
