Pinworm diagnosis. One of the easiest ways to diagnose a pinworm infection is with a tape test. Wrap the clear tape around your finger (adhesive side on the outside). In the morning when your baby wakes up, press the tape to the skin around the baby’s anus. Pinworm eggs will stick to the tape. [1] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • Immediately store the tape in a sealed plastic bag. Don’t forget that tape contaminated with worm eggs can spread to other people.
  • Be sure to perform a tape test before your child goes to the toilet or bath. Some doctors recommend doing this test for 3 mornings in a row, but you may only need to try it once.

Go see a doctor. Even if you only see worm eggs on the tape, you need to take the infected child to the doctor. The doctor can confirm that the child has a pinworm infection and not something else. Be sure to bring the tape to your doctor to see. [2] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • Your doctor can look at the tape under a microscope to see if there are worm eggs on it.

Take medication for pinworms. Pinworm infections can be treated with 2 doses of medication. The first dose is used when worm eggs are detected. Second dose used 2 weeks later. This is to kill all adult worms that hatch after the first dose, as the drug does not kill pinworm eggs. [3] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

  • Everyone in the house must be treated at the same time.
  • Common pinworm medications are mebendazpe, pyrantel pamoate, and albendazpe. Pyrantel pamoate is available without a prescription. Other drugs sold by prescription. You should talk to your doctor about which medication is appropriate.

Understand the limitations of natural therapies. It is important to remember that there is no scientific evidence to support these alternative therapies – their effectiveness is anecdotal or based on personal experience, and there is no way to know the exact effects. Whether the alternative is effective in the treatment of pinworms.

  • You should ask your doctor first if you want to try alternative therapies. These methods still need to be used in conjunction with medication prescribed by a doctor and should not be considered the sole treatment.

Use garlic. Garlic is said to be an effective home remedy for pinworms. The first thing is to eat a lot of fresh garlic. Garlic can help reduce and kill pinworms when an infected person goes to the bathroom. You can also use a mixture of garlic and oil applied around the anal area. Garlic can kill worm eggs and the oil will help soothe the itch.

  • How to make garlic mixture: Crush 2-3 fresh garlic cloves, then add a few teaspoons of castor oil or mineral oil to the garlic. Remember to use just enough oil to form a paste-like texture. You can also make a paste by mixing garlic with petroleum jelly (Vaseline cream).
  • Be sure to talk to your doctor about home remedies before using them.

Try using technology. Laboratory studies have demonstrated turmeric’s ability to kill parasites, although researchers aren’t sure if turmeric can kill parasites in humans. However, spicy foods like turmeric are said to be effective in treating pinworms. You can take 300 mg of turmeric in capsule form 3 times per day.

  • You might consider drinking tea with turmeric. Soak a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of hot water for 5 minutes. Drink 2-4 cups.
  • Do not take turmeric if you are taking blood thinners, as turmeric increases the risk of bleeding.

Drink wormwood tea. Wormwood has long been used to remove worms from the digestive tract. You can mix 3-4 drops of tincture of wormwood in a glass of warm water and give it to your child to drink 1 cup per day. Adults can drink 2 cups per day.

  • Consult your doctor before using wormwood tea.
  • Do not take this herb if you are taking anticonvulsants. If you’re allergic to ragweed, you’re probably also allergic to wormwood.

Hand washing. Everyone in the house must wash their hands often. You should pay attention to washing hands after testing pinworms with tape on children or after contact with children infected with worms. Wash your hands before eating or when putting your hands in your mouth. Remember to wash thoroughly with soap. [4] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

  • Start by getting your hands wet. Rub soap thoroughly. Remember to rub soap between your fingers and around your nails.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to scrub underneath the nail – worm eggs can get stuck under the nail, especially if an infected person has just scratched.
  • After soaping, rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry your hands thoroughly.
  • Keep fingernails short and trim them to prevent irritation and reduce the risk of infection.

Shower in the morning. People infected with pinworms should shower as soon as they wake up. Pinworms lay eggs at night, so the anal area will have thousands of eggs. These eggs can spread to others or hatch into worms. As soon as they wake up, the infected person should take off the infected clothes and take a shower. [5] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

  • Take a shower instead of a bath. The water in the bath will be contaminated with worm eggs and enter the body or mouth, leading to reinfection of the worms.

Keep underwear and bed linen clean. Because pinworms lay eggs in the anus, infected people must change their underwear every day. Do not put dirty underwear in the laundry basket with other clothes. Keep an infected person’s underwear separate to reduce the risk of spreading worms or worm eggs. [6] X Trusted Source National Health Service (UK) Go to Source

  • Wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in the hottest water possible. If you don’t want to wash it every day, you can store it in a sealed plastic bag before washing. Rinse clothes at least twice.
  • Make sure no one reuses towels during this time to reduce the risk of spreading worm eggs.
  • Consider using disposable gloves when handling items that may be contaminated with worms.
  • Do not shake out worm-infested clothes or linens before they have been properly laundered. This can cause the eggs to spread and lead to reinfection.

Learn about the route of infection with pinworms. You can get pinworms by eating, touching anything infested, and putting your hands in your mouth. Once in the intestine, the eggs will ripen and hatch into worms in the intestine. Female worms can emerge from the intestine through the anus and lay eggs in nearby skin. [7] X Research Sources

  • Adult pinworms are white and less than 2.5 cm long or the length of a paperclip. At night they move to the anus to lay eggs. They can lay up to 10,000 eggs. [8] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to the source Worm eggs will hatch and become infectious within hours.
  • Pinworm eggs can live for up to 2 weeks on clothing, bedding, food and other surfaces. They can also live up to 2 weeks on pet fur, but only humans are infected.

Identify risk factors. Children under the age of 18 are most at risk of pinworm infection. It is estimated that 10-40% of all children are infected with pinworms at some time. [9] X Research Sources Young children are most at risk, along with family members and carers. [10] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • Children can unknowingly spread pinworms in the home. If your child has pinworms, you must treat the whole family because of the risk of them unknowingly infecting others.

Recognize the symptoms of pinworm infection. Unfortunately, most pinworm infections have no symptoms, so the person infected with gium doesn’t know they’re infected. If there are symptoms, the main sign is itching around the anus. This phenomenon usually occurs at night, when the female worm lays eggs and the eggs hatch. The itch can be very intense, and the child will be very uncomfortable. Other symptoms may include urinary tract infections and insomnia. [11] X Research Source

    • Infection can occur when the patient scratches too hard and tears the skin.
    • You can diagnose a pinworm infection by testing the tape, but it’s still a good idea to take your child to the doctor.
