How to Invert Colors on Your Chromebook Screen

Most operating systems these days have something called “Invert Colors” or in Chrome OS is known as “High Contrast Mode” (in this article, we are going to use these terms interchangeably). This feature changes the colors of the content to make them a lot more contrast and easier on the eyes.

It’s originally added as a means of helping people with light sensitivity issues to navigate their Chromebook better. But even if your vision is fine, you could enable the “High Contrast Mode” on your device and get some benefits that you won’t receive under a normal screen mode.

Why use invert colors?

Although it makes everything looks a bit off, there are many benefits of enabling inverted colors on your Chromebook:

• A white bright background and can put stress on your eyes. Inverting colors mean the light exposure is significantly reduced and can help combat eye fatigue.
• Darker screen produces less blue-light which could help you maintain a healthy circadian rythm.
• Less bright screen consumes much less energy, thus preserving the battery life.
• People with photosensitivity issues may find high contrast content easier to scour.
• Additionally, with mostly dark background, people around you can’t see the screen clearly. Effectively adding an extra layer of privacy when using the Chromebook in public.

Now you have understood the hidden benefits of it, let’s invert colors on your Chromebook device.

Pro Tip: If you like the dark theme but don’t want to use the inverted color mode, try to use a dark mode on Google Chrome instead.

How to enable inverted colors mode in Chromebook.

1. Open your Chromebook and click the clock on the bottom shelf.

2. Select Settings.

3. On the left panel, click Advanced and then Accessibility.

4. Then hit the Manage accessibility features menu.

5. Toggle on the Use high contrast mode.

6. Now the screen colors are inverted.

Sidenote: This mode won’t affect colors in screenshots. The picture above is just for example which I edited on Photoshop.

The change is only visible to you. For example, if you take a photo and send it to your friend, they would see a normal-colored picture while you, when this mode is enabled, can only see a negative photo.

All colors on the screen will be inverted, including the mouse cursor. Luckily, Chromebook has a dedicated feature to change the cursor color to your personal liking to adapt to the inverted screen.
