This article will show you how to set up a second monitor for your Windows or Mac computer. Using two monitors doubles the display space for your desktop.

Most laptops support two monitors. If your laptop has at least one video output port (such as an HDMI or VGA port), you can attach an external display via the video port.

  • Some Windows laptops don’t support dual monitors, but all Apple MacBooks do – if you’re using a Mac, skip to the second monitor connection section. [1]

Not all desktops support two monitors. Your computer’s graphics card and motherboard determine whether you can use two monitors at the same time. [2]

Check your computer’s video output port. Most computers have at least two video output ports; that means you can usually connect to a second monitor. However, if the computer has two (or more) ports that are not in the same row, they do not have the same graphics card and cannot be used to connect two monitors. [3]

  • For example, if you see two HDMI ports side by side horizontally (or vertically), it means your computer’s graphics card supports two monitors. This also applies to other outputs (such as the VGA output in addition to the HDMI output).
  • Desktop Windows computers typically have these three ports on the back of the case.
  • If you only see one video output port on your desktop, your computer’s graphics card only supports one monitor. Laptops with a single video output port can often support multiple monitors.

Determines whether the computer’s motherboard supports two monitors. Nearly all motherboards on newer computers support multiple monitors, but older machines may not. You need to do the following steps to check if the motherboard supports dual monitors:

  • Find the name of the motherboard.
  • Type the name of the motherboard into a search engine (such as Google).
  • Select a search result that lists motherboard features.
  • Look for the “Multi-Display”, “Multi-Monitor” or “Dual Display” feature.

Identify the computer’s video connection port. On the back of your computer’s CPU enclosure (or monitor if it’s an iMac), you’ll see multiple ports; one of those ports is being used for the main display. Common connection ports include:

  • DVI — A large piece of plastic with many small square holes inside.
  • VGA — A colored trapezoidal piece of plastic with many round holes in it.
  • HDMI — Slim and flat hexagonal port. This is the port found on most newer computers and televisions.
  • DisplayPort — Similar to HDMI, but with an extra thin edge instead of symmetry.
  • Thunderbpt — Available on the back of most iMac screens; Thunderbpt connector has lightning icon below. You can attach an adapter for the above video connections to the Thunderbpt port (such as VGA to Thunderbpt). [4]

Check the connection of the second monitor. The second monitor must have at least one of the above ports. You don’t have to use the same connection for the first and second monitor.

  • For example, you can connect a first display using a DisplayPort cable and connect a second display using HDMI.
  • In some cases, you can set up a second monitor using a wireless connection. For example, if you want to use your iPad as a second display, you can create a wireless connection between the device and some computers through the Air Display app.

Buy a cable or adapter that you don’t already have. If you don’t have the right cable or adapter to connect the second monitor to your computer, you can find them online or at a computer parts store.

  • Especially when you want to connect a second monitor to your iMac, you need a Thunderbpt cable or a Thunderbpt port adapter to connect to the port on the back of the monitor.

Connect the second monitor to the computer. Attach one end of the second monitor’s video cable to the port on the back of the computer, and then attach the other end to the second monitor.

Connect the second monitor to the power source. You will attach the monitor’s power cord to a power source, such as a wall outlet or surge protector.

Select display options. You need to click on one of the following options in the list, depending on your preference: [6]

  • Extend these displays — The second monitor will be an extension of the first.
  • Duplicate these displays — Content on the first monitor will also be displayed on the second monitor.
  • Show only on 1 — Content visible above the fold only.
  • Show only on 2 — The content is visible only on the second monitor.

Click Keep settings when asked. The display settings will take effect after this operation. If you chose to extend the display, you should now see the regular display spread across the first and second monitors.

Uncheck the “Mirror Displays” box. If you want to extend the display to a second monitor, make sure the “Mirror Displays” box is unchecked.
