Learn the different formats. There are many DVD drive formats as follows: DVD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW. These symbols correspond to the read and write capabilities of each type of drive. Typically, newer drives are DVD+/-RW or DVD RW. They can read and write DVDs.

  • Most newer drives have a write function, but you can still buy one that can only read discs. They are labeled DVD-ROM drives.

Decide whether to buy a Blu-Ray drive. Blu-Ray is the newest storage disc format on the market, they can save more data than regular DVD. The Blu-Ray drive allows you to watch high-definition Blu-Ray movies, read data from Blu-Ray discs and even DVD discs.

  • The price of Blu-Ray drives has dropped significantly, and burners are even more affordable.
  • Even if Blu-Ray drives are untitled (BD-ROM), they can still burn DVDs.

Compare disk read and write speeds. When looking for different models, it’s a good idea to compare read and write speeds. This parameter will tell you how long it takes to read and write various formats on the disk.

  • Newer DVD drives usually have a read speed of 16X, a write speed of up to 24X. These parameters are only a comparison with the speed of the 1X drive, not the actual read and write speed of the drive.
