JPEG (also known as JPG) is an image that is compressed to reduce file size, suitable for sharing and posting on the network. Therefore, when you want to enlarge or reuse the JPEG file, the image will be grainy and broken. You can enhance the quality of JPEG files by fine-tuning the image, color, and contrast with image editing software. If you are familiar with photo editing operations, you can use Topaz DeJPEG software; if you are a beginner then you can use free software like Pixlr. If you are familiar with Photoshop, then access the powerful tools in this software to improve image quality.
Steps
Using Pixlr

- Zoom in until you can see every single pixel. Choose View > Zoom In.
- Select the eye dropper icon in the dialog box, located just above the hand icon. Use this tool to select the color near the pixel you want to repaint.
- Select the brush tool, located just above the paint bucket icon. Click on the number next to the word “Brush” to expand the tool’s settings. Reduce the opacity to 40% and the hardness to 10%. Choose the brush shape that suits your needs.
- “Dot” the brush carefully on the pixel to color. Click one by one to color the pixels. Use the eyedropper tool to change the color if needed.
- To reduce the mosquito noise, distortion of the object’s border, you need to color the same color as the surrounding object. Reduce brush size and opacity for easier control over coloring.
- Zoom in and out from time to time to get an overview of the photo.
- Zoom in until you see every single pixel. Choose View > Zoom In.
- On pixlr, you stamp with the brush tool. Select the brush tool and adjust the settings. Select a soft brush on line 2 and reduce the opacity. The soft brush and low opacity make it easier to blend colors together.
- Select the copy mark tool, located just below the paint bucket icon. Drag the mouse to the location you want to capture and copy. To activate the copy mark, Windows users must hold down the Alt key, and Mac users must hold down the ⌘ Command key. You click on the area you want to select while holding down the key. Release the mouse and key at the same time.
- To stamp, drag the mouse to the area to be edited and click on it. Repeat the above operation if necessary.
- During the process, you should zoom in and out of the image regularly to check the overall picture. [7] X Research Sources

- A high-quality image is an image that is less compressed, more pixels, so it consumes a lot of data. The saved file is large in size and the image is sharp.
- A low-quality image is an image that is highly compressed, with few pixels, so it consumes less data. The saved file is small in size and the image is less sharp, easily broken. [11] X Research Source
Using Topaz DeJPEG
- Turn off Photoshop. If you use Adobe Photoshop, you need to disable the software before installing DeJPEG. If using other software, it is not necessary to turn it off.
- Run the installer. Double click on the downloaded installation file to start the trial process. Enter the trial license key (emailed) when prompted, then click “Install” to proceed with the installation.
- Photoshop: Photoshop users can move on to the next step as DeJPEG is automatically installed into Photoshop’s plugins folder.
- Paintshop Pro: In the File menu, choose “Preferences,” then “File Locations.” Select “Plugins” on the left side of the screen, then click the “Add” button. Navigate to the DeJPEG plugin folder then click “OK.”
- Photo Impact: Open the program and press the F6 key. Select “Plugins” in the list, click the “…” button at the bottom of the first empty plugin folder in the list. In the directory list, select the DeJPEG plugin, then click “OK”. Restart Photo Impact before starting to use the filter.
- IrfanView: Open the program, expand the “Image” menu. Click on “Effects”, then select “Adobe 8BF Filters”. Select “Add 8BF filters” in the menu, navigate to the DeJPEG plugin folder and click OK.
- Photoshop: In the Filters menu, select “Topaz Labs” and then select “DeJPEG 4”.
- Paintshop Pro: In the Effects menu, select “Plugins”, then select “Topaz DeJPEG”.
- Photo Impact: Open the Effect menu and select “Topaz DeJPEG”.
- IrfanView: Open the Image menu, click on “Effects” and then select “Adobe 8BF Filters”. Select “Topaz DeJPEG” in the filter list.
- Reduce Artifacts: First, move the slider all the way to the left. Now, slowly move the slider to the right and observe the details in the preview pane. When moving the slider to the right, the border will be softer but will see noise and checkerboard. Continue moving until the above factors are balanced.
- Sharpen: This slider helps us re-evaluate the softened edges with the Reduce Artifacts slider. When moving the slider to the right you will increase the sharpness.
- Sharp Radius: This slider is used in conjunction with the Sharpen tool. Try moving the slider left or right until the border looks sharp and the artifact disappears.
- Smooth Cpor: Move the slider left or right until you are satisfied with the image in the preview pane.
- Clear Edge Radius. If you want to adjust the border color in detail, click on the “Advanced” setting, then drag the “Clr Edge Radius” slider upwards. Use in parallel with the Edge Threshpd slider until you are satisfied with the image.
- Adjust Saturation. If the photo colors are pale, move the “Saturation” slider to the right to increase the color level.
- Add grain. Try using the “Add Grain” slider for a more natural look. Move the slider to the right to increase the number of particles.
Using Adobe Photoshop
- If you don’t have much time or don’t have Photoshop installed, see how to use Topaz DeJPEG.
- If you want to improve the quality of your photos for use on Facebook or Instagram apps, this method won’t be as effective as using filters on apps. Pixlr has many free filters that can disguise imperfect JPEGs. If you want to make photos stand out and don’t care about size, try using Pixlr.
- Strength: This is the number that determines the level of noise reduction, the lower the quality, the higher this number should be. Drag the slider to the right to see the effect when increasing the strength setting.
- Preserve Details: The smaller the percentage, the more blurred and soft the image is, and also reduces noise.
- Sharpen Details: You can offset the Preserve Details setting by increasing Sharpen Details as it will make the edges of the image sharper. Don’t forget to check the “Remove JPEG artifact” dialog box.
- When satisfied with the preview image, click “OK” to save the new image.
- Zoom in on the image until the color blocks (tiny squares) are clearly visible in the area of the image you need to edit.
- Use the eye drop tool to select the color near the color block you want to remove.
- Select the brush tool. You need to lightly paint over that block of color. Set hardness 10%, opacity 40% and flow 100%.
- Click one at a time, “dot” the brush on the block of color. Don’t hold the mouse and paint in batches because it doesn’t look natural. You can change the colors freely to match the colors, shadows, and highlights of the original image.
- Reduce the brush opacity to 10% for smoother transitions, such as the brow area on the skin. You should choose a neutral color between your skin tone and eyebrow color to fill in the transition. Because of the low opacity, the change happens step by step and looks very natural, don’t be afraid to color the brow area and vice versa.
- Click on the stamp icon and press the Alt key until the mouse pointer turns into a reticle. Select the area right next to the color block or artifacts when compressing the image, avoid color block selections. You should not copy artifacts.
- Resize the brush to fit the artifact area when compressing the image, you can scale it 1-10 px. Set the “hardness” of the brush between 10 and 30% and the “opacity” to about 30%. Apply “dots” point by point to correct the wrong color blocks. Frequently reselect the area you want to copy (by pressing the alt key) because you have to move the entire image.
- Reduce the opacity in the transition. The wrong color blocks sometimes also affect the shape of the image (note the circular iris area is not smooth with many protrusions). You can use a brush to redraw the edge affected by the wrong color block.
- In Photoshop, choose File >> Save for Web & Devices .
- In the drop-down menu, select “JPEG” and set the quality value to between 80 and 100. Note that the higher the quality, the larger the file size.
- Alternatively, you can choose “PNG-24” to save the file as PNG. The PNG file is larger than the JPEG, but the image is not compressed too much.
Advice
- The history section of Photoshop only saves a certain number of steps while you have to go through a lot of steps in the photo editing process. When you shrink the image, you will realize that there is an error before Photoshop saves it. To avoid this, take a photo again so you can go back to the previous stage if you don’t like the change. You can find the capture button at the bottom of the history panel. Scroll down to see all photos.
- Don’t be afraid to change your brush settings and copy marks, especially if you’ve got a lot of experience using Photoshop. If you don’t want the color dot to affect the image, change the settings.
- If you are editing an image, pay attention to the difference in colors displayed. A blue flower can have many shades of blue: blue, navy, green, purple, brown, etc depending on the light, shade and reflection. Do your best to blend the colors together with an ultra-opaque brush. You can use copy seals if there are too many different colors in a small space.
