This wikiHow teaches you how to import contacts from an Excel CSV (Comma Separated Values) document into the Contacts app on Android. Although an Android device can’t read CSV files, you can convert any CSV file to an Android-compatible format by importing it to your Google Account and exporting it to a vCard file. Once the conversion is done, you can transfer the vCard file to Android via Google Drive, then import the vCard file to your device using the Contacts app.

Create a spreadsheet of contacts on Excel

Create a title for your contacts. You can add a title to the spreadsheet by clicking on the top cell and entering a description. To generate CSV headers, you:

  • Enter FirstName in cell A1 .
  • Enter LastName in cell B1 .
  • Enter Phone in cell C1 .

Enter contact information in each box. Starting in the second row, we’ll start entering first name, last name, phone number, and email address (if any) one at a time in columns A , B , C and D .

Save the document as a CSV file. Depending on your operating system, proceed as follows:

  • Windows — Double-click This PC in the center of the page, enter a name for the contacts file, click the “Save as type” bar, select CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) (*.csv) from within drop-down menu, click the Desktop folder on the left side of the window, and then click Save .
  • Mac — Click the “On my Mac” button, enter a name for the file at the top, click the “Where” box and select Desktop , click the “Format” drop-down box, select CSV file and then click Save .

Select the CSV file. Go to the folder where you saved the CSV file (e.g. desktop), then click the CSV file to select it.

Click the IMPORT option at the bottom of the window. The contacts in the CSV file will be imported into your Google Account.

  • The contacts you upload here will be added to your Google Account on all devices, including Android devices if you’re signed in to the same Google Account; We won’t need to create a vCard file and import it to the device unless you want to save the contacts directly to Android’s main memory.

Select the folder of the imported contacts. Click on the folder with the current date in the left sidebar to see the contacts in the CSV file.

Click Export on the left side of the page. A window will pop up with the selected content in the CSV file you imported.

Click the blue EXPORT button at the bottom of the window. The vCard file with the title “contacts” will be downloaded to your computer. This is the vCard file that you use to import contacts to your Android device.
