When it comes to Sapphire, people often think of blue by the name Blue Jade, but they also have red, yellow, orange, green or other mixed colors. Natural sapphire is found underground or underwater. Synthetic Sapphire, also known as Artificial Sapphire, is created in a laboratory. We can distinguish natural Sapphire by finding imperfections or inclusions within the stone, breath test and inspection. For man-made sapphire, look for air bubbles, test for hardness, and shine a light through the stone. Also, don’t forget to ask the seller about their Sapphire.

Observe the signs of real Sapphire

Look for imperfections or inclusions within. Use a jeweler’s magnifying glass with at least 10x magnification for a close look. Natural sapphire is formed with many other small substances inside, so look for minerals or speckles inside the stone. These imperfections are a positive sign that this is a real Sapphire. • Lab-made sapphire (fake stone) has no natural inclusions. On the other hand, some natural sapphires have no defects, but if you find imperfections, it is natural sapphire.

Conduct a breath test. Pick up the Sapphire and breathe in to blur the stone. Count how long it takes for the mist to begin to fade and disappear completely. Natural stone will shine back in just one to two seconds, while synthetic sapphire takes up to five seconds. [2] X Research Source

Take the Sapphire for inspection. Inspection centers can test and identify gemstones. After inspection, they will issue a certificate telling you information about this Sapphire, such as whether it is natural or man-made, treated or not, among other properties. [3] X Research Sources

  • After the gemologists fully examine the stone, they will provide you with an official confirmation. If your family owns a valuable and natural Sapphire, it should be inspected to ensure that you will receive the highest value in the event of a transaction.
  • Tested Sapphire will sell for a better price.

Our experts believe that: Testing by reputable centers is the only way to confirm whether a Sapphire is real or not. They will use equipment such as refractometers, magnifying glasses and polarizers to evaluate the stone. Try searching for inspection centers near you or contact someone in gemological organizations such as the Gemological Society of Vietnam.

Distinguish fake Sapphire

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/2/28/Determine-if-a-Sapphire-is-Real-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px- Determine-if-a-Sapphire-is-Real-Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/28/Determine-if- a-Sapphire-is-Real-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Determine-if-a-Sapphire-is-Real-Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460 ,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Check for air bubbles inside the stone. Lab sapphire is essentially glass that has been subjected to the same formation process as natural sapphire. Because of their glass nature, they still have air bubbles after forming. If you see air bubbles inside the stone, this is not real Sapphire. [4] X Research Sources

  • You have to rotate the Sapphire and observe it from all angles. Chances are the air bubbles are only visible from an angle.

Hardness test. If you have two Sapphires and you know for sure one is real, rub the other with the natural stone. Gems of equal hardness cannot scratch each other, so if both are real Sapphires, nothing will happen. If the real Sapphire causes scratches on the other, then the stone is not natural (or is of lower quality). [5] X Research Sources

  • This method can damage the synthetic Sapphire, so you need to be careful if you don’t want to lose it.

See how the light reflects off the Sapphire. Turn off the lights in the room and shine a flashlight on the stone. Real sapphire will only reflect light of the same color as the stone. Fake Sapphire (made from glass) will reflect colors other than the color of the stone.

Assess the quality of Sapphire stone

Observe the intersecting lines inside the Sapphire. Some natural sapphires are of such low quality that they cannot be sold. Vendors often conceal this by using lead glass to improve the quality of the stone. If you see diagonal cuts inside the stone, this is most likely real but poor quality Sapphire.

Ask the seller if this is a natural stone. If you’re considering buying Sapphire from a gem dealer, don’t forget to ask about the product’s provenance. In order to protect the interests of consumers and increase transparency, sellers must disclose information about the gem products they sell. • Don’t be afraid to sound harsh or ignorant when you ask. This is your money so you have the right to know what kind of product you are buying.

    Ask the seller if this Sapphire is natural or treated. There are many methods used to improve the color and clarity of Sapphire. While this helps the stone look more beautiful, the natural properties will not be much. [7] X Research Sources

    • Treatments are not permanent, so you should ask what treatment the stone was given and how long it will take. After the treatments are gone, the stone will return to its original appearance.
