Apply a moisturizing lip balm all day. Use a lip balm with shea or cocoa butter ingredients for the best results. Remember to reapply as often as you feel your lips are about to dry out (about every two hours).

  • Apply lip balm every morning before applying any other lip products, including lipstick, lip gloss, and lip stain.
  • Choose the product that best suits you. Some balms have been certified safe, while others contain a potent mint extract that can cause allergic reactions. Read the information on the label of the lip balm before you decide to buy it to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • Popular lip balm brands include: Burt’s Bees, Blistex, Carmex, Chapstick, CO Bigelow, Nivea, Softlips, EOS and Banana Boat.

Avoid lip balms that contain fragrances, flavors, or colorants. These ingredients may dry out the lips or cause an immediate allergic reaction in some sensitive users. Choose a lip balm with all-natural ingredients.
Use moisturizing lipstick. Most cosmetic brands have moisturizing lip balm lines, which include Clinique, Jouer, Dior, Benefit, Revlon, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier.

  • If you’re more inclined to use low-end products than mid- to high-end products, just look for lipsticks that have a moisturizing label on the package. [1] X Research Source
  • Check the ingredients for shea extracts or cocoa butter as well as any moisturizing oils like coconut oil and/or piu.

Use products with a sun protection factor of at least SPF 15 to avoid sun damage. Your lips are very sensitive to the effects of sunlight, so be sure to apply lip protection when outdoors.

Exfoliation and Lip Care

Rub sugar on your lips. You can use any raw food, but avoid allergenic products like salt as they can dry out your lips.
Exfoliate with honey, sugar and piu oil. Mix one tablespoon of honey with two teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of piu oil. Rub the mixture on your lips and leave it on for a few minutes. [2] X Research Source
Make a coconut-lemon oil conditioner. Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut oil, 3 drops of yellow lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of beeswax and heat in a pan over low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture is melted. You can also use green lemon in case yellow lemon is not available. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and let it cool until it hardens. Apply this mixture on your lips like you would use a regular lip balm. [3] X Research Sources
Apply butter, nim oil, ghee or milk cream to your lips before going to bed. These substances have the ability to deeply moisturize, especially effective for chapped lips. Wash off these substances when you wake up.
Make a paste with baking soda and water and apply it to your lips. Let the mixture harden and rinse with water.
Apply aloe vera gel to red, chapped and/or sunburned lips. Aloe vera is especially gentle and can help you get rid of sun damage.
Apply sliced cucumber to your lips. The phytochemicals present in cucumber will stretch the cplagen in the lips, making them plump and moist. Massage your lips for a few minutes with a few slices of fresh cucumber.
Use a toothbrush for any of the above exfoliants for a more pronounced exfoliation effect. Only use a soft or medium-hard brush to avoid scratching your lips. You can simply use warm water or use a brush to scrub.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. One of the best things you can do for your lips and for your skin is to drink lots of water. Water is not only to provide the body but also to nourish the skin and promote new cell growth. In fact, dry lips can be a sign that your body is not getting enough water.

Eat lots of vegetables. Foods containing vitamins B and C are especially good for your skin. Consider taking a supplement if your diet is lacking in these vitamins. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like fish, avocados and almonds are also especially good for your skin. You can also take an Omega-3 supplement daily.
  • Warning

    • Do not use cheap, flavored lip balms because they will make your lips dry and you will lick your lips more often.
    • Try not to lick your lips as saliva will dry them out.
    • Throw away lip balms that are more than a year old. They may have bacteria in them.
    • Do not apply more than one lip product at the same time. Give your lips time to “breathe”.
    • Do not share lip balm with others as this can spread germs.
    • Do not rub your lips too hard to avoid scratching your lips.
