A sense of humor can become someone’s strength. This skill will make it easier to interact with others, improve your health, and even help defuse difficult situations. People often don’t understand that they don’t have to be funny to have a sense of humour, you just have to learn to see the positive side of things.
Steps
Understanding Humor
- A sense of humor has many physical, cognitive, emotional, and social benefits, including: reducing pain and stress, improving mood and creativity, enhancing friendliness, and build happier relationships with people. [2] X Research Source
- You don’t have to be a humorous person, or a frequent teller of jokes, to have a sense of humour.
- Watch movies in a variety of comedic genres, including movies starring Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, Steve Martin, or Chevy Chase. Watch classic comedies such as Meet the Parents (The Bridegroom), Young Frankenstein (Young Frankenstein), Monty Python and the Hpy Grail (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Blazing Saddles (Black Sheriff), Trading Places ( Bargain), Finding Nemo , and Bridesmaids . And there are also a series of comedy programs by famous comedians in the country such as Hoai Linh, Truong Giang, Tran Thanh, etc..
- Observe others carefully, but do not merely copy their humor. A true sense of humor will be completely genuine and a reflection of your personality. [6] X Research Sources
Learn how to make fun of
- For example, you can try a joke like: I only drink 2 times a year, 6 months each time . [8] X Research Sources
- Don’t be sad because you think you’re ugly. Always believe that you have a hidden beauty that the more you look, the more it hides .
- If you don’t know what to say, you can comment on the weather. For example, “If it doesn’t stop raining, I’ll have to row a boat to work”.
- Watch stand-up comedians or funny videos online. Focus on how they convey the story, the theme, and how they turn everyday situations into something rather witty.
- Observe who you think is quite funny in life, and identify what you love about their humor and maybe add it to your own.
- If you’re telling a joke, think about the context. Is this joke appropriate for work, a date, or in the presence of a certain group of people? Does it offend anyone?
- Know the difference between “teasing the rich and teasing the poor.” To make fun of the rich is to challenge the status quo by redirecting the joke to the powerful. To tease the wretched is to reinforce the status quo by making fun of a group of miserable or oppressed people.
- Racism, sexism, and rude humor can be quite offensive. Making fun of religion, political beliefs, and other belief systems will lead you into humiliation territory. You should keep the tasteless, offensive jokes in your head or save them for friends who live with the “whatever” mentality.
- Humor that humiliates others or aggressive humor is used to criticize and manipulate through teasing, sarcasm, and ridicule. [11] X Research Sources They are quite humorous when directed at celebrities, but are deeply hurtful if used in front of friends and can damage your personal relationships. [12] X Research Source
Looking at the Positive Side of Life
- Sometimes, a sense of humor helps to defuse a stressful or unpleasant situation. A joke can reduce stress and make people feel more comfortable.
- When you know you’re about to “get mad” at someone, make a joke. If you’re arguing with your sibling, just say, “We haven’t stopped arguing about the same thing for 10 years! Obviously we’re stuck in the underage.”
- If someone teases your old car, you can say, “I bet you’re not as pretty now as you were 15 years ago!” [15] X Research Source
- Smile at factors that are beyond your control, such as age and appearance. If you have a big nose, laugh at it instead of getting upset. If you are getting old, laugh at your aging. Even if you don’t feel comfortable with these, you should ignore them, especially if you can’t change them.
- Laugh at your own shame and petty mistakes. This action will help you become aware of the humor in your human nature.
- Think about an embarrassing moment in your life. Find a way to present it in a humorous rather than humiliating way. You need to laugh at yourself, and perhaps exaggerate or enhance the tragedy of the event.
- Instead of getting angry because your employees are always late for meetings, turn it into a joke like, “You’re lucky you don’t have to run an airline.”
- While a coworker’s joke can be bland or offensive, there’s no need to get upset about it. Having a sense of humor means being comfortable with things and choosing for yourself what element you want to express your displeasure with.
- Having a sense of humor will help you realize that it’s okay to look silly. Even if you actually look pretty dumb, laugh at yourself. Then you can smile because you tried something new that was outside of your comfort zone. And finally, do some research on the person’s personality. Learning about their interests will help you put a smile on their face.
Advice

- Don’t stop trying! Humor is an important part of life.
- Remember to do the funny thing at the right time. This is a very important factor in making others laugh. Not every situation requires humor.
- Possessing a sense of humor will help you make more friends. People love to surround themselves with funny people!
- If you’re feeling sad/depressed, think about/look at something that has made you laugh out loud in the past. You will feel better immediately.
