Identify the benefits of humor. A sense of humor allows you to find humor in both positive and negative situations. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as boost coping abilities and self-esteem. [1] X Research Source

  • A sense of humor has many physical, cognitive, emotional, and social benefits, including: reducing pain and stress, improving mood and creativity, enhancing friendliness, and build happier relationships with people. [2] X Research Source

Know the difference between being funny and having a sense of humour. Being funny means being able to show humor: perhaps telling a funny story, making a witty pun, or making a joke at the right time. To possess a sense of humor is to be able to ignore and not take things too seriously, and to be able to laugh at – or at least be aware of the humor – at the absurdity of life. [3] X Research Sources

  • You don’t have to be a humorous person, or a frequent teller of jokes, to have a sense of humour.

Find your sense of humour. What makes you laugh? What makes you smile and feel happier? Here’s how you can support your sense of humour. [4] X Research Sources There are quite a few types of humor, such as situational humor and humor in making fun of life. [5] X Research Sources

Observe and learn. If you don’t know how to be amusing or see things with a sense of humour, you should observe other people. How often do your friends and family laugh at the world around them and at what happens to them?

  • Watch movies in a variety of comedic genres, including movies starring Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, Steve Martin, or Chevy Chase. Watch classic comedies such as Meet the Parents (The Bridegroom), Young Frankenstein (Young Frankenstein), Monty Python and the Hpy Grail (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Blazing Saddles (Black Sheriff), Trading Places ( Bargain), Finding Nemo , and Bridesmaids . And there are also a series of comedy programs by famous comedians in the country such as Hoai Linh, Truong Giang, Tran Thanh, etc..
  • Observe others carefully, but do not merely copy their humor. A true sense of humor will be completely genuine and a reflection of your personality. [6] X Research Sources

Focus on having fun rather than being funny. Having a sense of humor will keep you happy no matter what life throws at you. This means you can laugh at life and laugh at the situation you are facing. Remember to focus on having fun.

Learn a few jokes. Sharing humor with others is a great way to make connections. If you want to bring humor into your social life, you can learn a few basic jokes. You can also search for funny pictures, witty sayings, and funny pictures online to share with the world. You should choose elements that suit your sense of humor. [7] X Research Sources

  • For example, you can try a joke like: I only drink 2 times a year, 6 months each time . [8] X Research Sources
  • Don’t be sad because you think you’re ugly. Always believe that you have a hidden beauty that the more you look, the more it hides .

Look for the humor in the similarities. People tend to laugh at jokes related to their situation, place of residence, or beliefs. [9] X Research Sources You can make light jokes about the weather or the city where you live to break the awkward atmosphere with others. If you both have similar careers, joke about it.

  • If you don’t know what to say, you can comment on the weather. For example, “If it doesn’t stop raining, I’ll have to row a boat to work”.

Surround yourself with funny people. Think about your funny friends. How do they bring humor into the conversation? What kind of jokes do they use?

  • Watch stand-up comedians or funny videos online. Focus on how they convey the story, the theme, and how they turn everyday situations into something rather witty.
  • Observe who you think is quite funny in life, and identify what you love about their humor and maybe add it to your own.

Practice. Practicing telling jokes can help you improve and become more natural. You can start by showing humor to family and friends you trust. Tell them your goals and ask them to be honest with you. Listen to what they say when they say you need to improve your joke. As you become more comfortable, you can expand your comfort zone by adding humor to conversations with someone you’re not close to.

Remember to be careful not to offend others. As you develop a sense of humour, think about context. Do you easily feel offended when others make fun of you? Regardless of whether you are making fun of or laughing at a joke, you should be careful not to offend or hurt the other person’s feelings. Having a sense of humor means approaching life with a kind attitude. You don’t use other people to make fun of, and don’t laugh when people make fun of others. [10] X Research Source

  • If you’re telling a joke, think about the context. Is this joke appropriate for work, a date, or in the presence of a certain group of people? Does it offend anyone?
  • Know the difference between “teasing the rich and teasing the poor.” To make fun of the rich is to challenge the status quo by redirecting the joke to the powerful. To tease the wretched is to reinforce the status quo by making fun of a group of miserable or oppressed people.
  • Racism, sexism, and rude humor can be quite offensive. Making fun of religion, political beliefs, and other belief systems will lead you into humiliation territory. You should keep the tasteless, offensive jokes in your head or save them for friends who live with the “whatever” mentality.
  • Humor that humiliates others or aggressive humor is used to criticize and manipulate through teasing, sarcasm, and ridicule. [11] X Research Sources They are quite humorous when directed at celebrities, but are deeply hurtful if used in front of friends and can damage your personal relationships. [12] X Research Source

Learn to laugh. Laughter is the key to a sense of humour. Focus on laughing every day, even if it’s just laughing at yourself. Enjoy the little things, find humor in everyday situations, and humor in life’s misfortunes. Smile as often as possible. And you should also try to bring laughter to others. Make smiles first, for yourself, and for others. [13] X Research Source

Laugh instead of reacting. When you’re in a stressful situation, step back and laugh. Anger is a pretty powerful emotion, but laughter also has the power to take over your mind and body. Make a short joke, laugh at the situation, or use humor to defuse the situation. [14] X Research Source It also helps you to reduce stress and annoyance.

  • Sometimes, a sense of humor helps to defuse a stressful or unpleasant situation. A joke can reduce stress and make people feel more comfortable.
  • When you know you’re about to “get mad” at someone, make a joke. If you’re arguing with your sibling, just say, “We haven’t stopped arguing about the same thing for 10 years! Obviously we’re stuck in the underage.”
  • If someone teases your old car, you can say, “I bet you’re not as pretty now as you were 15 years ago!” [15] X Research Source

Removes defensiveness. Ignore any factors that can put you on the defensive immediately. Ignore criticism, judgment, and lack of confidence. Instead, let them slip away by dealing with them through humor. People are not born to criticize or oppose you. So smile or laugh out loud. [16] X Trusted Source HelpGuide Go to Source

Accept yourself. Being indifferent to yourself is one way to maintain a sense of humour. You should learn to laugh at yourself. Sometimes people need to take themselves seriously, but learning how to laugh at yourself is one way to build self-acceptance. No one is perfect, and we all make mistakes. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and maintain a positive sense of humor in life.

  • Smile at factors that are beyond your control, such as age and appearance. If you have a big nose, laugh at it instead of getting upset. If you are getting old, laugh at your aging. Even if you don’t feel comfortable with these, you should ignore them, especially if you can’t change them.
  • Laugh at your own shame and petty mistakes. This action will help you become aware of the humor in your human nature.
  • Think about an embarrassing moment in your life. Find a way to present it in a humorous rather than humiliating way. You need to laugh at yourself, and perhaps exaggerate or enhance the tragedy of the event.

Do not put pressure on others. Part of having a sense of humor is transferring it to someone else. Just as you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself, you should try to apply the same principle to everyone else. Forgive and focus on the positive when someone makes a mistake. Laugh out loud at everyone’s mistakes as you would do to yourself. This method will not only make you feel better, but it will also make your partner feel accepted, and this will help your relationship. [17] X Research Source

  • Instead of getting angry because your employees are always late for meetings, turn it into a joke like, “You’re lucky you don’t have to run an airline.”
  • While a coworker’s joke can be bland or offensive, there’s no need to get upset about it. Having a sense of humor means being comfortable with things and choosing for yourself what element you want to express your displeasure with.
