How to Get Wheat
Buy Starts From Leif
The first way to get wheat in New Horizons is by purchasing starts from Leif, the sloth NPC who visits your island each week with his mobile plant stand. The first two items in his inventory will be vegetables or other edible crops. Leif will sell wheat starts for 280 Bells each and they are also available in bulk.
Leif will visit your island on a random day once per week. The precarious nature of his schedule makes it difficult to plan around Leif’s visit. A more reliable way to have Leif on hand throughout the week is by unlocking his shop on Harv’s Island. Doing so requires a donation of 100,000 Bells and some patience. It’s best to prioritize unlocking Leif’s shop early to ensure you can get wheat from him as soon as he has it in stock. Leif’s shop inventory on Harv’s Island will update weekly, so be sure to check back regularly.
Find on Mystery Islands
The alternative to buying wheat plants from Leif is to find them growing on mystery islands available through Kapp’n’s boat tours. You can only find wheat growing on the islands that Kapp’n takes you to; Dodo Airlines tour islands won’t have it.
The downside to this method is that Kapp’n charges 1,000 Nook Miles per tour and he will only take you on one boat tour per day. There’s no guarantee that you will find an island growing wheat, either. However, you should still bring a shovel along in case you do come across some wheat plants to dig up.
Wheat grows similarly to pumpkins in that it takes several days to reach full growth. After planting your starts in dirt, make sure to water them daily for four days to ensure maximum yield before harvesting.
